I: Infection
The Host hadn’t seen this coming.
It had been raining, a few weeks ago, and the Host always went for a walk when it rained. He liked the rain. It was calming, and peaceful, and he liked getting soaked to the bone. He’d accidentally slipped during this particular walk, because wearing dress shoes with zero traction in the rain was not exactly a good idea, and he’d face-planted in the mud. He’d just laughed, pushed himself upright, and continued walking, pulling back up his bandages when they’d slipped down around his neck in the fall.
He should’ve gone to Dr. Iplier.
It’d started out as simple headaches. Headaches, then a soreness in the back of his sockets that then turned into headaches and made him irritable. It only got worse. Dr. Iplier had checked him over, inspecting the Host’s sockets, but he couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary. The flesh of the Host’s sockets was already red and, well, fleshy. Dr. Iplier couldn’t see the signs of the infection.
Not until the nausea, the fever.
Not until the Host was lying pale, sweaty, and delirious in a hospital room.
The infection was too close to his brain. Dr. Iplier had done a good job of cauterizing and sealing up the initial wound of the Host’s -- at the time, the Author’s -- severed optic nerve, but it was still a path directly to the Host’s brain. And with the wound being permanently open, unable to completely heal thanks to his oh so lovely abilities, there was little hope. The infection had spread. Dr. Iplier had caught on far too late.
The Host lay in the bed, in too much pain to move much, despite the drugs he’d been given. Dr. Iplier held his hand. He was crying, the Host was dimly aware of that. There was a surgery that would scoop out the infected brain tissue, but...the Host didn’t want that. He didn’t want to live for the sake of living, half of his brain missing. He didn’t want to be that kind of burden on his family, on Dr. Iplier.
Hey, he was crying, too.
The salty, hot tears pooled in the Host’s sockets as he stared at the ceiling, and he winced as the aggravated the infection. Dr. Iplier must’ve seen, because the hospital chair he sat in was scooted closer, and his grip on the Host’s hand grew tighter. Trembling fingers fingers brushed the Host’s hair from his sweaty, feverish forehead. “What’s wrong? Are you in pain, I can get a nurse in here.”
“No, the...the Host is fine.” His voice was barely a whisper as the lie passed through his lips easily. His narrations had gone quiet days ago. He could lie without fear of being forced to bare the truth. He didn’t like it. But Dr. Iplier was worried and grieving enough as it was. The Host didn’t want to add onto his pain.
He startled a bit at the feeling of soft lips against his forehead, turning his head slightly towards Dr. Iplier. His head felt like it was stuffed with molten lead. He tried his best not to wince again. “I love you.” Dr. Iplier bent his head, pressing the Host’s hand to his forehead. “I love you so much, you know that right? If -- if only I had seen the signs, I could’ve -- I could’ve helped you, I could’ve saved you, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I --”
The Host felt the tears against his hand, and he shifted his hand to cup Dr. Iplier’s cheek, brushing away his tears. “The Host doesn’t blame Dr. Iplier,” he whispered, voice raspy. Nothing like the power voice he’d once wielded. “It’s not his fault. He needn’t blame himself.”
“But --”
The Host pressed his thumb to Dr. Iplier’s lips, smiling and chuckling weakly. “Dr. Iplier took such good care of the Host, even when the Host didn’t want it or...or see the point in Dr. Iplier going through so much effort. Dr. Iplier tried. He tried, and -- and he loved the Host, and that’s --” The Host’s voice broke completely. “That’s all I could ever ask you to do.”
Dr. Iplier briefly went stiff. In all the years the Host had existed, the only time he’d ever spoken in first person was when he was still shifting, still in the early stages of transitioning from the Author to the Host. And here he was, on his deathbed, slowly dying of infection, and whatever magic that made him the Host was splintering at the seams.
Dr. Iplier climbed into the bed with the Host, wrapping his arms around him, and sobbing into his chest. “I love you so much, please don’t ever forget that, I love you, I love you, I love you...”
The Host laughed again, managing to lift his arms up to wrap around Dr. Iplier in return. “I love you, too.”
The Host went peacefully, sleeping soundly, with the one he loved most in his arms.

A team of researchers at Baylor College of Medicine has discovered that when the brain is infected with a common fungus, it changes in ways similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s disease. The new research delves deeper into some of the molecular mechanisms behind that process.
Using animal models, the research team discovered how the fungus, called Candida albicans (C. albicans), enters the brain, activates mechanisms for its clearance, and generates amyloid beta (Aβ)-like peptides—toxic protein fragments thought to be central to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Previous research has implicated fungi in the development of chronic neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, but their mechanisms are not entirely understood.
“Our first question was, how does C. albicans enter the brain? We found that C. albicans produces enzymes called secreted aspartic proteases (Saps) that breakdown the blood-brain barrier, giving the fungus access to the brain where it causes damage,” Yifan Wu, the study's lead author and a postdoctoral scientist in pediatrics said in a press release.
