Socially awkward extroverts exist
I was thinking earlier about why a lot of people don’t initially interpret JJ Leroy as socially awkward, but immediately interpret Yuuri Katsuki and Otabek Altin as socially awkward. (Shush I’m ultra back on my JJ bullshit today)
And I think it’s because he’s extroverted.
I started thinking about the extroverted characters I relate to a lot and what kind of extroverted characters I relate to versus what kind of introverted characters I relate to.
The introverted characters I tend to relate to aren’t awkward because of their introversion but most of the extroverted characters I relate to are awkward because of their extroversion
I’m a true ambivert: on personality tests like Myers Briggs and others that supposedly measure introversion versus extroversion to some degree I score REALLLY close to 50/50 (60/40 in favor of introverted last time I took the MB test, but exactly 50/50 on a “personality DNA test”) and social isolation has really highlighted how much I depend on both social interaction and alone time to have energy.
But it’s not my introverted side that makes me socially awkward. I don’t shut down around other people, or try to get out of social situations because I don’t want to be around people for long. I don’t end up in stilted conversations that feel awkward because I’m just sitting there going “hmmm”
I babble. I blurt shit out without thinking. I tell grocery store cashiers my fucking life story and do this awkward laugh thing that drives my VERY introverted sibling absolutely batshit. I accidentally get myself trapped in convos about things I like a lot bc I like talking about them. I jump to conclusions
My extroverted side is SUPER socially awkward.
And I think it’s important to highlight that extroverted people CAN be awkward. People who are extroverted can talk too much in social situations. I have also ADHD so I’m also impulsive and have little filter but neurological disorders and mental illnesses can and lend themselves to social awkwardness, because what society views as “awkward” is based on what society views as “normal” or typical.
