Ink's 2025 Fic

Hey, at least I made it here before February. This year I published 45,387 words, which is a 52.93% decrease from last year. Yeah, the me being MIA and not answering messages because things are on fire is still in effect.

This year, everything was TMA, spread across 5 works, and all of it was continuations or spin-offs of past works, so I don’t have a huge amount to say. Next time I make one of these posts at least one big ongoing fic will be on the list for the last time, promise! Cult AU, teen jon, brokenverse, and outstanding vampire saga ongoings are top of the list.

i know about what you did (i wanna scream)- 10k, complete, Jon&Gerry, Jon&Georgie; another cult au side au, in which Melanie and Martin really do get banned from the Institute library before they can figure out who Jon is. Gerry decides to fix it, resulting in no unexpected obstacles that would have been resolved if he did his homework first.

from what has been broken- 21k. WIP, Jon&Gerry; I have left Jon and Gerry in Trevor and Julia’s clutches for most of the year 😔

Vampire Saga Extras- 35k, 4 works, Jon&Gerry, Jon/Elias; Only one of these is mine right now, but if you like the main Vampire Saga routes you should check out these side aus! As long as you have the stomach for worst-case scenarios. Gerry in particular spends the most time in the blender, with Jon a very close runner up. My entry is getting a sequel some time this year (month? Please? It’s getting so long), but personally I recommend Sutton’s Flatline, where Jon gets vamped and Martin gets dead. Gerry and Melanie are slayer partners, it’s great.

The Vampire Saga Route 1- 136k, 13 works, Jon/Martin, Jon&Gerry, OG Archives crew; Route 2 got completely neglected this year, it’s shameful. Route 1’s theme of the year has been actions (vampire murder) having consequences (trauma and Elias).

He's distracted enough he almost misses the flash of color in his periphery when he gets home and heads straight to his bedroom. The guilt bites more keenly when he turns and sees a vase of roses on his kitchen table as he feels his heart melt. There's a card tucked in, and he's already smiling as he walks over and opens it. He wishes Martin were here, so he could show proper appreciation for the gesture. He may not like poetry, but it holds his affection for the romantic the love of it has made of Martin. Jon reads the note, and he isn't smiling anymore. I've missed you, my love. x

sitting pretty on the throne, nothing more i want (except to be alone)- 230k, WIP, Jon/Beholding; Cult AU is currently hung up on the stuff that has to happen before the actual climax can kick off. I’m going to be better this year. The likely length of what’s left means this isn’t the top candidate for fics to actually get finished this year, but it could happen. You’ll at least have an idea of what the shape of the ending might be by 2027, promise.

Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.

Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"

I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.

If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.

1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
