Brain Breaks: A Project For Intro To Education and Learning
Brain Breaks, in a way, are a way of cooling off your students from the monotony of the current, run-of-the-mill education system.
It could be as simple as a bit of chatter and talk for 10 to 15 minutes before getting back to what you were doing. Maybe an activity that has nothing to do with the lesson. It could be anything, as long as the children are engaged and it keeps them curious and learning.
We hear the word Educational and we immediately turn everything into that one episode of Arthur where Mr. Ratburn puts on an Educational Documentary about Clams and Crustaceans. We don’t want to learn as kids; most just want to have fun and be active. Play with our friends, chat and color. How about instead of learning for 7 hours a day, instead we give a brain break where we just do whatever for 15 minutes.
This doesn’t just apply to elementary school; it applies throughout our education, up until it isn’t compulsory. High school students are the most confused and need their breaks as well. 6 to 8 minutes during passing isn’t going to cut it most of the time. You need a break in the day. France has been letting kids go home for lunch for 2 hours a day as part of their day. Finland is completely different and lets kids work together to create and learn on their own. I believe the least that the American School System could do is let kids have more interaction. Especially with nowadays people getting information and learning new things on their own rather than sitting in a classroom for 45 to 89 minutes.
I barely focus most days, and yet can tell by test scores, not just the work handed in, that I do fairly well and sometimes do better than the people who studied.
