the regression stigma seems like a curse for most of the story, but it actually was originally a promise. a promise that both yoo joonghyuk and kim dokja will learn and grow. a promise that they will survive, a promise that they will meet. that meeting isnt a permanent one, it cant be a permanent one given that kim dokja is the oldest dream, but its a promised meeting regardless. the fact that it manifests as a ring on yjh's hand, specifically...
from the beginning, it was a promise: a promise they would meet. but what yoo joonghyuk wanted wasnt just to meet his sponsor. he wanted his sponsor to be beside him with his companions, and believed he was stuck behind that wall. and 1865yjh has the same goal. but while 0yjh was naive and didnt understand what being the oldest dream means, 1865 wishes to pluck a star from the sky with complete intention.
so, he always wanted to bring stars down from the sky. but when he forgot 0, he believed his motive was violence, to kill them. but in fact, what he wanted wasnt for all constellations to die, he wanted a singular star to be brought to earth. no wonder the yjh who knows everything has stargazing lvl 10 as his primary skill, its truly a summary of what hes always been trying to do

the oldest dream's power seems to be creation, but his most active power comes from denying reality. this ties into the destruction of worldlines that dont have yjh in them, most notably 999. he denies that that worldline has a story, and since the star stream is sustained by stories... maybe its less that the oldest dream creates stories, and more that stories only exist when he does not deny them the right.
because kim dokja is in a horrible state of mind and doesnt have all the information anyway, in main story he only thinks of it as him creating worlds and causing them suffering, when in fact what he does isnt cause suffering, but give existing suffering a meaning, a story.
and as such a recorder is one who delivers stories to the oldest dream to decide whether its a story or something to deny. we havent really gotten yjh's pov on why he chose to regress / why hes searching for kdj so hard, if he literally cannot have that story written while kdj denies it...
this solves all the inconsistencies in worldbuilding re:oldest dream. his power isnt creating worlds, its to give meaning to some worlds as "stories" and deny others as "not having a real story". there are many worldlines, but only ones with a story are recorded on the final wall.
oldest dream's power isnt to create text, but to take white text on a white page and turn it into black text on a white page. because the text all exists in the snowfield, see, the words all exist, but they cant be read or understood, but they might as well not exist. a tree falling with no one to hear, so it doesnt make a sound.
so you see, the snowfield is the essence of the story, it is the story that will always exist, and the recorders are putting that text in order to create a story, and when the oldest dream chooses to acknowledge it it becomes a story proper, black text on white page.
so lee hakhyun is both a recorder and the oldest dream because he has both the power to deny stories AND the power to put text in order, which is how hes able to rewrite stories, he denies the story that already exists and then puts text in an order that he accepts. this also connects to the kkomas being able to rate what lee hakhyun writes in the snowfield and decide if its probable...
