Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “retrospective” at the new Brant Foundation New York space (and what a magnificent space it is!) is where Neo-Expressionism, graffiti, Cy Twombly scribble strategies, and a wonderful lack of concern for the viewer’s meaning-making logic takes full bravura precedence. Initial none-believers will walk away convinced of the importance of Basquiat’s marks...like a moment of satori tweaking, caressing, and slapping our visceral being like a hail of notes improvised by one of Jean-Michel’s jazz heroes.
