24th September 1848, death of English painter and writer Branwell Brontë, brother of the writers Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Suffering from tuberculosis, Branwell’s death was hastened on this day at the age of 31, from alcoholism, laudanum and opium addiction. Further suffering from alcohol withdrawal, his sister Charlotte recorded that he persisted as he was dying in wanting to show the power of human will, and remained standing until he died. Four days later he was interred in the family vault, to be joined in death shortly on the 19th December by his sister Emily, her health deteriorating rapidly, due to ongoing tuberculosis, the harsh winter, and the contamination of water in her house through run off from the church's graveyard. On the 29th May 1849, Anne also died from tuberculosis.
