Minha mãe, apesar de umbandista, ela pegou o livro e me perguntou:

Although since I was a child I saw in houses that my parents frequented, posters, photos and calendars of the classic Yemanjá, the first orixá that caught my attention was Omolu.
The black guy in the straw suit covering his head, for me, it was a mystery. And I bought the pocketbook at the newsstand, not knowing much about what it was about. The booklet in the 80's became a true catechism for the beginnings of religion.
My mother, though a bandit, she took the book and asked me:
_ you had the guts to buy this?
I've never had a lot of curiosity, I've always read everything from outer space to the underworld of magic.
To this day, I consider him one of the most beautiful orixás in candomblé.
The orixá of sickness and healing, the old father, the adopted son of Yemanjá.
It is said that Omolu/Obaluaê hides his body out of shame from the scars of smallpox, which is why he was abandoned by Nanã Buruquê.
Curious Iansã, wanted to know what Omolu was like under his clothes. He cast a wind that lifted her up completely, and what was seen, to the surprise of all the orixás present, a beautiful, wonderful black.
In my experience with Afro-Brazilian religions, I felt that Obaluaê is the orixá that best cares for their children.
For the most part, obaluaê's children are flashy, their presence is felt wherever they enter. It is rare for the children of Obaluaê who are not winners in life.
Its food is famous: Popcorn.
Its month is August, where the sheds commemorate the Olubajé and there are processions of the terreiros in the name of the Omolu.
Small processions, unfortunately.
Religion is fraught with prejudice, and people turn away when the faithful enter the streets.
If she comes down your street and you're offered Omolu's popcorn, take it. It is a powerful amulet of protection and cleanliness.
In Afro rituals, popcorn is a magical item that absorbs negative energies, widely used for health and unload rituals. This powerful magic ingredient belongs to Obaluayê, Orixá of health and evolution. healing of the body and spirit
Throw it on top of your head or in the backyard. In the cleaning sweeps normally. It spiritually cleanses the environment.
Okay, if you don't want to get in the way, politely refuse or accept the popcorn and then throw it in running water or a little cart, with respect.
Long live St. Lazarus!

Ela revigora, acaricia o filho.

Enjoying the holiday festivities. I decided to talk about Yemanjá. The Queen of the sea, the mother of all heads (all people). Even if you carry another orixá, Yemanjá is your mother. She, alongside Oxalá, (the father of all), are the main orixás of candomblé and umbanda. Maybe she's the most famous goddess in Brazil. In The Cell, when Jennifer Lopez appears as a goddess of the waters in the killer's mind, the character is inspired by her. His fame came with the New Year's Eve of Rio de Janeiro. Where its date is December 31, and adherents of the religion go to the beaches with offerings to the goddess. The tradition is so intrinsic that even those who are not adept at the Afro-Brazilian faith usually take white flowers and throw them in the sea. Asking Yemanjá for a good new year. Yemanjá is a mother, she is protective, she is the maternal lap for the afflicted and the weary of the struggle. She invigorates, caress her son. In umbanda its colors are blue and white, in the candomblé is white and silver. The tradition of turning the year dressed in white in Brazil is a heritage of Afro-Brazilian religions. You want to try it? December 31st. buy white flowers, Yemanjá prefers the palm, but being white, all right, go to a beach, and throw in the sea one by one, asking the goddess protection and prosperity. Talk to her. They say she listens...

Thor
Xangô
Zeus...

So far I've only written about Afro-Brazilian mythology. Tupã is the first god, truly Brazilian, that I will write about, because he is from Brazilian indigenous mythology.
He is the best known of all, as many among the tribes that worshiped him as by Brazilians today.
This is due to having been chosen as the reference god to the Christian god of the Jesuits who arrived in the Portuguese colony to catechin the Indians.
He is the main and greatest god of the indigenous religion.
Practically the creator of almost everything. Heaven, earth, water. He taught the Indians agriculture and crafts.
Its abode is heaven, and its manifestation is thunder (rays).
Do you remember anyone?
Thor
Xangô
Zeus...
But I don't think it's really versions of these gods. After all, when man did not understand the world around him, he created gods to explain and understand.
Tupã, despite being the god who brought knowledge to mankind, he is first and foremost a feared god. Who doesn't think twice about releasing his fury to men, he saw storms and lightning.
In Brazil there is a debate between religious and secular.
NGOs, even international, have been entering brazilian forests with the mission of converting the Indians.
It is very likely that religion will soon disappear and become mere mythology.
The problem in all this is not even the conversion of the Indians to Christianity.
With conversion, shamans have been losing power and prestige. Shaman is the spiritual leader of a village.
With him the knowledge of the remedies of the forest.
The original language of the village with the total disappearance of prayers and songs.
Will it be good for the Indian?
I don't know, i don't know
But Brazil will certainly be much poorer in its culture.

No Rio, São Sebastião é Oxósse.

January 20th is the patron saint's day of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The city has the official name of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. They say the saint fought against the French invasion, alongside the Portuguese. After the victory, the city never again suffered invasions.
When the African slaves arrived in the Portuguese colony, they tried to maintain the cult of their Gods. That's when the sincrestry came about. Where a statue of a Catholic saint was placed on the altar for the slaves to revere, but in fact they revered the orixás. To this day, in the Baroque churches of Minas Gerais, the 19th century. XVII in the midst of paintings, there are symbols of candomblé ornated on the altar. It was the slave's way of worshipping his gods, that even at the lowest stage of mankind, the African did not abandon them.
In Rio, São Sebastião is Oxosse. The hunter. The guardian of the forest, the orixá of plenty and sustenance. A god also linked to dance and the arts. In a modern way, he is the protector of all those who go from home to work and support their family. Job seekers often ask him for help. The best known: CABOCLA JANAINA

CABOCLO OF THE SEVEN CROSSROADS The entity that officially founded Umbanda
CABOCLOS BOIADEIROS A phalanx of caboclos connected in the gathering of obsessive spirits and also in the spiritual and energetic cleansing of the temples of Umbanda.

The day of the week dedicated to Ossain is Thursday, its main colors are green and white and its greeting is “Ewé o! ewé o!” or “Ewé ewé assa!”. Food/offering for Ossaim (adimu) Here the Ingredients of Ossain’s Food:

I always spent New Years at the beach. I had a friend who owned a little stall on the sands of Copacabana beach.
Então eu aproveitava e fazia a minha oferenda à Yemanjá, a rainha do mar.
So I took the opportunity and made my offering to Yemanjá, the queen of the sea. After all, they always said that Yemanjá is the orixá who owns my head.
I took care, treated, made my offerings with faith and affection, not only on December 31st. There were more than 10 years of consecutive misfortunes, an endless cycle. I insisted, cried on the beach, asked, asked what I was doing wrong. Yemanjá ignored it.
Um dia cansei. Desisti. Abandonei a religião.
One day I got tired. I gave up. I abandoned religion. I learned that Orixá is the one who chooses. Practicing religion, making the saint just for wanting to, can have harmful consequences for life. If Yemanjá is mother, as they say around, with me she was worse than stepmother. I must be the result of her miscarriage. There are orixás who do not care about their children, there are orixás who, even though they have never been treated, make their child a king.
Patience. Today I wonder how I lost so much time depositing all my faith and affection to a being who always shrugged my shoulders.
Feliz ano novo!
Still, I love and respect Afro-Brazilian mythology. As Olavo de Carvalho once said: The greatest defenders of Umbanda and Candomblé are atheists.
And non-religious university professors. When you go to research temples, the priests are white and most of the attendees are middle class.
There are people who are really happy with their orixás. There are even reports of miracles, I with the hard work, learned that I will never be one of them.
Happy New Year!
Soon!
Well, not so much. I'm going to stay very slow in the series, no hurry. Write when you feel like it. Follow the tag or follow me so you don't miss the news.
Too bad the drawings are horrible. The Brazilian doesn't really know how to honor what's his. Unless it's carnival or ass.
Little by little we are changing this mentality, but at the count drops and with many barriers. After all, an elite and politicians sucking wealth and slaves of their own people, only has power as long as this same people is an alienated, as was the Brazilian.
