plotted starter for @bratpak​‘s steve ! 

        sitting at this lunch table was practically torture for carol for a few reasons. for one, it was one of those weird tables not claimed by any clique where transients and losers sat out of desperation. she wasn’t technically alone today because a pair of her classmates were sitting at the other end of the table but they had made no effort to acknowledge her presence so she might as well have been. 

        secondly, it was so close to the trashcans the smell really put her off her lunch. no wonder hardly anyone sat here. if she was particularly unlucky, there was a chance someone would ‘miss’ the trashcan and hit her with something disgusting... again. yeah, that wasn’t a day she wanted to relive. 

        and thirdly, from here she had a clear view of the fold-out table where prom tickets were being sold. the line of excited students sprawled about seven feet from the end of the table. head in her hand, she watched as couples cuddled up and friends gossiped as they made their way to the front of the line. her own plans were not yet decided. no ticket purchased. carol’s younger self would be shocked she hadn’t been among the first in line when they became available a few days ago but then again, nothing in her life had turned out how she had planned. 

        she could tell someone had sat directly next to her but wasn’t in a hurry to see who it was. they probably just needed a seat as they chatted with someone at the table behind her or something, no way they were here for her. slowly getting out of her own thoughts, carol turned to check out the person next to her. her brow quickly furrowed in confusion once she saw who it was. “ ... you lost or something? ”
