Different storytime moods always call for a variety of different stories. Sometimes you want funny wordplay, other times fact-filled non-fiction, and still other times all you want is a really lovely, old-fashioned fairytale. William Steig, creator of the original Shrek, has become a childhood standby by offering just such beautiful stories, and "Brave Irene" (1986) is, in my opinion, one of the best. 📚📙📗 The story of a little girl with the delightful name of Irene Bobbin, sent through the woods on a stormy day to carry out a task for her ailing mother, hits all the right notes: it is sweet without being cheesy, detailed without dragging on too long, and evokes all of the things one associates with a good folktale... struggle, courage, generosity of spirit, and a happy ending.
