May 24, 1962  Navy test-pilot, NASA Astronaut & Navy SalLab Aquanaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter  was the first American astronaut to wear a wristwatch in space, a  Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute chronograph, during his May 1962 MA-7 "Aurora-7"  mission. After almost 5 hours, Carpenter was recovered off-target north-east of Puerto Rico by US Navy aircraft carrier USS Intrepid assisted by USS Faragut. During recovery, Carpenter’s Breitling got severely water damaged but Breitling provided him with another Navitimer chronograph. Photo shows US Navy Commander Carpenter wearing his replacement Breitling in 1966 while getting a reward from the Jewish veterans association in New York. Carpenter was the 6th human to fly in space and went on to become a US Navy aquanaut after meeting French naval officer/researcher Jacques-Yves Cousteau... (Photos: NASA)
