October 1962... First Omega Speedmaster in space Mercury 7 astronaut & Naval officer Walter Marty Schirra orbited the Earth six times in the little “Sigma 7″ spacecraft on October 3, 1962. After 9 hours 13 minutes, he was recovered in the central Pacific Ocean by the USS Kearsarge. Schirra retired from NASA in 1969 and remains the only astronaut to have flown onboard one man Mercury, two men Gemini and three men Apollo spacecraft. Being a wristwatch aficionado, as he owned Accutron, Bulova and Rolex wristwatches, Schirra wore his personal Omega Speedmaster CK2998-4 chronograph on his inner lefthand wrist.
