so I've listened to the dalek's master plan in its entirety before, but with the return of the missing episodes I now find it important to observe that in the tardis group, the SECOND brett and sara come in, Steven loses any power he ever may have had as the man of the house (tardis) and is restrained to vaguely yelling 'hey!' whenever somebody does something he doesn't like, and obviously of course dying of blood poisoning and getting paralyzed

Prep for the 60th: Personal Opinion #1

As you might have noticed when I recapped the Daleks’ Master plan, I left out the discussion of the Doctors “companions” which is one of the main reasons this is a notable episode. But personally.... Steven Taylor is the only companion in this story. And here’s why I think that: For some reason official companion lists include Katarina and Sara Kingdom. Both are good in this story, but I don’t consider them companions because they don’t travel with the doctor enough.

Katarina is a young hand maiden who escapes the conquest of Troy thanks to Vicki, but has absolutely no idea where she is or what’s going on. And how could she? All she thinks is they are on their way to the spiritual lands of the deceased, but that they must help Steven heal and that the Doctor can do that because he is a god. Her death when she gets taken hostage by a prisoner named Kirksan who is trying to steal the ship, I don’t feel she is sacrificing herself because she doesn’t even know what a space ship is. I think she was just trying to get back in and hit the airlock button. Plus why do we want to consider her a companion when the Doctor treats her badly? Sure he’s nice, but at one point he plantantly tells her to never ask questions because he hates that and yet she’s the one who needs the most explanations.

Sara Kingdom on the other hand knows exactly what is going on and in the first two episodes of the story she is in, she’s actually actively working against the Doctor because she’s employed by Chen. Once they get transported off world to Mira, Steven and the Doctor try to tell her why she is in the wrong, but once they meet the Daleks she realizes their right and becomes completely loyal to the Doctor. And since she’s security she tries to protect him. But other than being hired muscle, her intentions to protect the Doctor seem weird when she doesn’t know anything about him or the TARDIS. Sure she is trying to save Earth, but that feels like a side quest most of the time. Especially when she stays behind to “help” the Doctor with the Time Destructor which ultimately kills her. I personally think her death is just to illustrate how bad the device is and nothing else because it doesn’t make sense.

Also, the other reason I don’t consider these two companions is because in the story we have another person who is in it just as long as they are, but is not considered an official companion and that’s Sara’s brother, Brett Vyon. Loyal to his cause to save Earth, he and the Doctor butt heads but ultimately have the same goal. And while yes he doesn’t travel in the TARDIS, he is just as brave as the others.

Anyways, just my personal opinion.
