Love, Simon means so much to me, good god. I’ve never sat down and watched a movie and felt so seen. When he couldn’t even say he was gay at the beginning, how his face fell when his dad made gay jokes and no one noticed, how you can almost feel his heart pounding before he came out to Abby-
I know how all those things feel! That breathless fear before you come out to someone and you either force the words out or back away and convince yourself you’ll try again another day, god, being afraid to tell your closest friend because what if it changes everything? The isolation, the fear, the shame. Hiding part of yourself for YEARS and having to watch yourself all the time so you never say anything incriminating. Feeling like your family doesn’t even know you. Saying nothing when straight friends and family say the ugliest shit about the LGBTQA+ community, and feeling like a fucking traitor.
I wish this movie had existed even a few years ago, because it would’ve cleared up some things for me. I walked out that theater raw and emotional and proud, because goddamnit I’m gay and I’m going to thrive even if everything around me discourages it. I haven’t felt this at peace or this filled with hope in so long, maybe ever. Seeing Simon get his happy ending makes me feel that it’s possible. Even if I have to say goodbye to my biological family, I still can make my own and surround myself with people who love every part of me.
This movie is so important, and I’m so thankful it exists.
listen. my dudes. my sweet pals....the lego batman movie is fucking GLORIOUS
it’s very self aware, which i love. the creators know the premise is ridiculous (in the best way) and run with it. it was genuinely hilarious, but also had great emotional depth. yeah, bruce is more Extra(tm) than any of us could ever hope to be, but his personal conflict feels very real. again with the self awareness; the Lesson is a big old cliche but it works! the narrative acknowledges that and goes on to be unexpectedly touching. 10/10, fucking excellent, would watch again.
also worth it for the inevitable “dick” grayson joke, barbara motherfucking gordon, “harvard for cops”, every scene with the joker, “snake clowns!”, dick’s fucking goggle glasses and fight play list, alfred being a longsuffering Dad(tm) of a emotionally repressed manchild, “i hate you” “i hate you more” “i hate you forever”, and batman freestyle rapping about how fucking incredible he is.
