It was inevitable. He can sell himself to the mob for political relevance as much as he likes, but the mob would never allow a Jew to speak with any nuance... No matter how pandering he made that position.
but I do think this quote displays an incorrect position. equal rights for palestinians and israelis doesn't have to mean the destruction of israel. i strongly believe in equal rights for all the people of the levant, and i think the way to do that is a two-state solution, with both states led by parties who aren't war criminals and terrorists.
i am however assuming, by the paraphrase brackets around "equal rights for palestinians and israelis", that sanders' actual position is slightly more grounded in reality, and some internet leftist with no understanding of nuance swapped it out for "equal rights" to make sanders sound more hateable.
an obvious choice, but shane hollander for the headcannon ask? :-)
#myshane
I talk about this all the time but my headcanon is Shane is overdue for a breakdown. It's going to happen and I think it would be best for him if it happens pre-retirement so he can still play hockey afterwards and gain his sense of self back. I honestly believe that he needs anxiety meds and therapy and nothing will push that man into that until he hits rock bottom. Luckily he's living with his husband now so it won't get so bad someone's gonna find his body but you can't tell me he's fine after the events if tlg.
send me a character OR a ship and i will respond with one (1) random headcanon about them 💫
sometimes i get a little self conscious about my instagram reels, but then all i have to do is look down and find dan howell right there beside me, and everything feels okay again
“why do jews refuse to accept jesus as the messiah” idk, why do you refuse to accept geraldine ferraro as the president of the us? oh bc she’s dead and she just factually never was the president? no it couldn’t be that. why do you build your whole religion around rejecting her
The whole point of investigating Ilya & Shane is about making the public look at something else.
The NHL knows they never cheated, the NHL was purposefully and consciously profiting off of the fact that they both play their craziest hockey against each other, not for a second did they actually think those boys were cheating just like no one in the PWHL investigates the women who get married to those on other teams, just like they’ve never thought twice about drafting family members.
It’s exactly what you were saying in your ask about Shane, Ilya and Jared’s stories not being unique: they wanted them out of the league and knew they needed a way to get the public to turn a blind eye to why 2 of the greatest players in generations were drummed out the same way they turn a blind eye to queer players whose names they don’t know.
This is exactly it.
Ilya and Shane are not fucking doctors or lawyers. They are not in a career where disqualifying conflict checks happen. And that’s not me hypothesizing—the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement is a publicly accessible document. There is no conflict reporting requirement contained in it—just a hard mandate that you do not create financial conflicts by loaning money to umpires or other league officials or otherwise gaining a financial interest in other entities representing players.
There is nothing about personal conflicts. There has never been anything about personal conflicts. We have never said that having a relationship with another player is a conflict. The New Jersey Devils and the Minnesota Wild play against each other, and everyone lines the Hughes brothers up for a photo op that the Devils’ PR Team will later crop Quinn Hughes out of.
The League does not fucking care if you have a relationship with someone from the other team. We have always had brothers playing against each other in the NHL. And if you say that there’s something inherently different about a romantic relationships that makes it impossible for players to play objectively against each other, then that is discrimination
Discrimination is just disparate treatment based on a protected characteristic. If you want to act like hockey players should be subject to this kind of extreme conflict checking, then 1) you needed to make that clear to the players in advance and 2) it needs to apply evenly. Which would call into question every single brother or cousin or whatever set who has ever played against each other in the NHL.
Like, if you tried to adopt some kind of theory where you said “well romantic relationships are just different we have to assume they’re committing multi-million dollar fraud even tho we didn’t think to even ask our players if they were romantically involved before this moment” I would high five every single person in my office. Oh my god they said the quiet part out loud. I’m winning on summary judgment. Holy shit I would do shots.
Ilya and Shane could still get in trouble for rigging games. Rigging games is bad no matter what. And you can rig games with 0 personal involvement with each other. The bad act is the game rigging, not being together.
But you can’t just assume players are rigging games. You need evidence. There is almost no way the NHL has that. This all happened way too fast. All they have is that Shane and Ilya are gay and romantically involved, and that is not enough.
Like, imagine if the police walked up to you and said “hey so we don’t have any evidence you killed this guy but just to be safe we’re going to put you on trial for his murder anyway. Don’t worry about this if you did nothing wrong then you’re going to be proven innocent. Btw we will stack the jury with people who hate your existence but do not worry king ❤️ the truth will set you free ❤️ trust the process ❤️” no! That’s fucking crazy! That’s such an obvious set up that you might as well prop a cardboard box up on a stick and set a sandwich underneath. Do not worry ❤️ it is not a trap ❤️
The NHL’s entire case is bad. They are publicly and blatantly doing the wrong thing. Shane and Ilya could almost definitely win in a court of law.
So why aren’t they in a court of law right now?
What people need to understand about the law is that sometimes lawsuits are fines that companies pay for the right to hurt you. It happens all the fucking time. Companies get sued for dumping Chemicals That Give You Every Type Of Cancer in a small town’s water supply and then the entire small town gets Every Type of Cancer and it gets to litigation and some memo between executives comes out saying “yea so if we do this we will give this town Every Type of Cancer but we ran the numbers on how much these people’s lives were worth and it’s cheaper to kill them and pay out the potential lawsuits than it is to safely dispose of the chemicals.” Punitive damage awards exist to deter this kind of behavior but people still do it.
The NHL doesn’t care if they get in trouble for discrimination. They want to drag their feet through an investigation and suspension and grievance and lawsuit for years and years and years. And the entire time they’re doing that, Shane and Ilya will rot on the bench, and hockey will continue on without them. Games will be played like normal. People will find new things to be angry about, and they will look away. And that is all the NHL needs to win. Even if they have to pay Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov millions in damages one day, then that’s fine. That’s not a deterrent. That’s a bill they decided to pay to get rid of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.
Litigation takes years, and athlete’s careers have the lifespan of a fucking goldfish. If they just go along with this investigation and try to clear their name through the official route, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov will be a tragedy we talk about in 30 years. It’s so sad, what a terrible loss of talent, we all agree it’s bad that we did this now that it’s too late to fix it. Pay no attention to how everyone who did this to them is still getting lauded for all the great accomplishments they made in the career they were allowed to have. Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov were truly great talents that were victimized By Discrimination and we shan’t dare lay the blame at anyone’s feet.
Roger Crowell gets to be one of the greatest if controversial commissioners in NHL history, and Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are two talents cut unfortunately short that we will mourn in a few decades when they’re too old for it to matter. They will never get back on the ice.
Shane and Ilya don’t want money. They don’t want damages from a lawsuit. They want to play hockey. The only way they get that is if the machine stops without them. They need the games to stop unless they are allowed to play in them.
Because that is the only thing that people will not be able to look away from. That’s the only way they don’t disappear. And the odds are against them.
auto immune disorders happen when the immune system ignores regulatory factors and begins attacking healthy bodily tissues, due to what scientists refer to as "sheer love of the game"
shane’s aura and confidence in episode 5 always kills me like he showed up to tampa with nothing but a duffel bag full of lube and condoms and a dream. and also the unwavering certainty that he was never going near pussy again
