Hibito after Space Brothers #0

OK. So now the English sub for Space Brothers #0 has been released (thank you Evil-Saizen guys!) I wanna talk about something. Specifically, just how much Hibito modelled himself after Brian Jay.

So he mentioned in the film in his email to Mutta that Brian was the kind of astronaut he wants to be like. And we find out early on in the series that Hibito is, like, unreasonably buff and works out a lot (why? turns out it’s because Brian did), that he has a pug with a dumb incomplete name, Apo (one of Brian’s dog’s puppies, and it’s not a dumb name after all - it’s after the scribbled-over book Brian left his will in), and he has a confident and charismatic public-facing persona - not that he doesn’t have a confident personality anyway, but I think the story goes on to show him to be quieter and more introspective in private than he might first appear - which, I think, he modelled on Brian. Additionally, while the film shows him to be a little out of his depth and struggling a bit with impostor syndrome and keeping a cool head when things go wrong, when it comes to his Moon mission, we see him acting calmly and decisively in a life-threatening situation (although it still takes a couple of last-minute interventions from Brian’s legacy to save him).

Basically, Space Brothers #0 shows us how Brian Jay strongly influenced Hibito to become the man he is in the main series, and I think it’s beautiful.
