Silk Road Society: Buddhist 3D Caves!!!

ECHOES OF THE PAST: THE BUDDHIST CAVE TEMPLES OF XIANGTANGSHAN opens this weekend (February 26–July 31, 2011) at the Sackler Gallery. Devotional Buddhist cave temples from 6th century China are recreated by combining sculptures with 3D-imaging for what I hope will be a totally tripped-out show (and opening) that combines video installation, music, sound and spiritual mojo. 

Why is this important? Because they were "once home to monumental Buddhas, and crouching monsters framed by floral motifs—the limestone caves were severely damaged in the first half of the twentieth century, when their contents were chiseled away and offered for sale on the international art market." Fuckin' art market.

The Freer and Sackler will also use this opening to launch The Silk Road Society, a new young professionals membership group, and an evening event on Friday the 25th which will include food, drinks and ambient live music by White Light, Yellow Heat (DC locals Brian Liu, Winston Yu and Jerry Busher and ???).
