I recently read Tunnels by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams.
This book starts off a little slow but once it gets going it doesn't really stop. And yes, it is a middle grade book but the authors do not speak down to the audience, they toss in advanced vocabulary and don't even look back the way Lemony Snicket does.
The characters are interesting, and believable as flawed people. Nobody is perfect or right all the time. There are even some twists and turns in the plot that I quite enjoyed. One of the main characters even has a giant hairless cat for a pet (this book was written before Saga so Bartleby existed before Lying Cat 🙀).

this is a Brian Williams appreciation post. as far as we know, he really just kinda took the whole "my son aged ten years in the span of two because he and his wife are doing spacetime shenanigans with her alien best friend, who is also my grandson-in-law apparently" thing in stride. I love him
