Eighth in a continuing curatorial series that specializes in teaming improvisers from France with their stateside counterparts, A Pride of Lions is arguably among the most overtly enticing entry in terms of eminence of roster. Bassists Joshua Abrams and Guillaume Séguron are newer associates and the former has strong ties to drummer Chad Taylor through mutual hothouse experiences at the late Fred Anderson’s erstwhile Chicago temple, The Velvet Lounge. All of these threads combine into a sturdy lattice of complementary experience and shared purpose. Recording quality of the encounter is a shade murky and skewed, particularly when all five players are brandishing their instruments at once, but an attentive ear is still all that’s needed to parse the participants. All of it is collectively improvised save a melodic kernel from Albert Ayler’s “Mothers” folded into the rich meditative fabric of the finale.

Rhythm is a central component of the quintet’s argot. Whether setting up braiding and abrading arcos strains or locking on undulating plucked grooves, Abrams and Séguron achieve a weave that is by turns watertight and porous and tailored to the moment. Their intricate and incisive interplay makes up the initial minutes of the performance as the horns wait at the ready in the wings. Taylor is equally versatile and responsive from the confines of his kit, stamping fragmentary tattoos that contrast with the raw-throated vocalizations of the horns or dialing back with carefully shaded dynamics. The galloping and galvanizing tumble he stokes in the fourth segment pushes Lazro’s tenor and McPhee’s pocket trumpet into some of the fiercest salvos of the concert.  

Africa is an indelible if unspoken ingredient as well, from the band’s picturesque moniker to the doubling Taylor and Abrams do on mbira and guembri, respectively. Their repeating, overlapping patterns on the second segment create a rippling aural surface for first Lazro’s tenor and later McPhee’s brass that eventually turns raucous and caustic toward the close. Baritone and tenor ride another revolving groove during the third part before jettisoning meter for an aerial joust between the horns, bowed strings and Taylor’s skeletal mbira accents. The added colors and timbres of these instruments give an already singular free jazz ensemble an even greater appearance of individuality.
