ZOLA - Blue
It’s hard to believe ZOLA is only 22 years old. As some have pointed out, she seems to be an old soul in a young body. The San Francisco based artist, who’s also a member of indie duo Loo:mings, won our hearts over with ease a month ago when she floored us with her spectacular voice on Too Fast Too Soon (revisit our feature, here). In under a month, the song has amassed over 60K streams on Spotify alone, after having been added to their ‘Fresh Finds’ playlist. And now, ZOLA is back with a new brandy-soaked single named Blue, an exquisite taste from her forthcoming EP. We’re inexorably drawn into the minimalist and sparse indie soul hymnal, so snug and intimate, dreamy and elegant, even as ZOLA melts our hearts with her oak smoked, deeply ravishing voice. It’s the sort of earnest and ambrosial drawl, seasoned with much vintage charm and a breathy cadence, that you’ll find yourself wishing you could hear off old crackling vinyl. Blue is deceptively simple. It may start out austere and understated, but it ruptures with a cinematic climax, an astral burst of blazing organ intensity that feels as if it’s bursting our own hearts. ZOLA brings us more of her picturesque lyrics and a clever, flawless fusion of soul, jazz, R&B, and indie pop on her new ballad. There’s no doubt she’s one of those rare talents to be cherished, for a long time to come.
ZOLA elucidates: “‘Blue’ is about going back to a snippet in my life looking for answers I thought I needed to move forward. It’s about being okay with not fully understanding the words said or things done. It’s about reminiscing on a relationship and falling in love with it all over again because without it I wouldn’t have learned and grown.” Tell me ZOLA isn’t wiser than her years, with a gifted approach on music and life. One can embrace heartache and sorrow, or even love them, despite all their pain, once one understands their roles as pivotal parts of your life. We may not have all the answers we’re searching for, but we can treasure all that has brought us to where we are now. ZOLA ever so poignantly yet sublimely captures that insightful rationale on her impeccable song, steeped not in unnecessary bells and whistles, or frills and ruffles, but an unadulterated aura that feels like it’s been simmered slowly in a mahogany barrel and aged to perfection. Blue can also be streamed on Spotify, here. Keep up with ZOLA on her website, here, or Facebook, here.

This is called the Apple Dumpling Bridge in my local country park. The name comes from a romanticised legend of the local populace selling apple dumplings to soldiers heading to the naval base during the Napoleonic Wars.
My son is currently running over the bridge and attempting to feed the ducks.
