EVERYONE SHUT UP IT'S A NATIONAL HOLIDAY
I am once again thinking about how the Master Emerald probably knows more about Knuckles than it lets on and how it's likely been keeping him alive far longer than he should have been
not me sitting here thinking about how Knuckles Wachowski only knows a) it's a possibility that he'll be killed at any moment, b) there's very little in the way of food and so c) the only way to live and eat is to kill/severely maim his next opponent in the gladiator arena and earn his next meal
I love the shots where Knuckles looks younger than what he appears to be
because he IS
he's been fighting and striving for his one purpose for so long and fought in battle arenas since he was a puggle and he just forgets that he's a child. he's a teenager. he's had to put up a font for people to take him seriously as a warrior.
ngl I kinda want Wade to help him realise that it's okay to let his guard down around those who care about him. that it's okay to be a child, be a teeanger.
he has so much trauma to work through and this series is barely going to touch it.
I wish. I fucking WISH that Sega (and fandom) remembered Knuckles uses chaos energy
thinking about how much trauma he has that a gladiator fighting pit is considered a safe haven/home
“you can call me Knuckles”
not “my name is Knuckles” or even “I’m Knuckles”
“you can call me Knuckles”
this sort of verifies for me that Knuckles hasn’t always been his name. maybe when Eggman and Sonic turned up he never had one. maybe it started as a nickname and it was just coincidence that it aligned with the name of his ancestral clan.
I always love seeing your takes on how Eggman being Knuckles' first friend and then him betraying him has such a deep effect on Knuckles. Like Eggman showed up on his island and not only showed Knuckles that there really was something beyond his island he also let him know of an incoming attack which would've allowed Knuckles to feel that he was fulfilling his purpose. and then on top of that it's very likely that Knuckles would've been open and shared so much with Eggman because he's had literally no contact with anyone ever. Eggman's betrayal cut this boy so deep that the scars of what he did are gonna stick around forever and there's just so much to explore and think about. So much of his character gets so much more depth and complexity with just that fact alone. I could go on and on about the Knuckles eggman dynamic and i think its criminally underexplored both in canon and fandom.
Oh it's definitely criminally unexplored and I think people need to acknowledge that Eggman both was Knuckles' first friend and his first interaction with betrayal. As someone who's been through that (friend betrayal), it's fucked up and it jolts your sense of righteous anger and injustice that I think Knuckles would definitely hold after the events of S3&K.
But he also holds hope that the Doctor can change. It's only in later games that he starts to adopt Sonic's attitude towards Eggman and abandons it a little but he seems to, briefly, try to believe in him. It's why he's gullible towards his actions and warnings in later games - he wants to hope that that was a one off but it becomes two offs, three offs, and Knuckles only has so much trust to give until it's down to three people.
