the crown and the spider

No one liked the deep woods. It was quiet in a menacing way, the sort of place that mothers warned their children to never go near. However, it’s where Bridgette made her home. A quiet little cottage tucked among the thick foliage. Despite her foreboding surroundings, it was a homey little place. There was always a fire in the hearth, flowers on the table, and the delightful scent of something cooking. However, it felt rather lonely. There were two bedrooms, one with a closed door that was always dim and depressing. It was clear that the young witch lived alone. Bridgette occasionally had visitors, lost travelers or those who sought her out for her skills in potion brewing or spell crafting. They were few and far between though.
So imagine her surprise, when there was a knock at her door early in the morning. Thankfully, she was already dressed, preparing breakfast for herself and the familiar that was never far from her side. Bridgette stilled, looking toward the door until another knock startled her into action. She wiped her hands off on her skirt before going to the door, opening it cautiously. “Yes? Can I help you?” There was no way to describe the man on the other side other than regal. He was straight-backed, with fair skin and pretty hair. His appearance was strange to see among the darkness of the woods. Bridgette couldn’t help but wonder if he was some sort of magical being. “You’re awfully far into the woods.”
