While arguing with my mom about me not wanting to attend my schools awards ceremony, I realized something. I haven’t earned good grades for my own satisfaction in years, if ever. It’s always been for my mom. Always. Earning good grades doesn’t make me feel proud, just relieved because it means she won’t yell at me. and as her first kid to go to real high school, if I’m not excelling like she did, that reflects badly on her. She was “gifted,” so of course I am. Average is unacceptable when your mom thinks you should be extraordinary
