Things I Like: Bright Sunshine - Executive Power Supreme

Every now and then there is a satirical band that is so misanthropic that it swings around to cathartic.

Executive Power Supreme is dehumanizing, misanthropic, and one of my favorite albums of 2025. A thrash (and noise rock?) concept band, Bright Sunshine focuses on the eponymous company that makes... some sort of product, it's honestly not really important to the listener or the company. Songs are focused on infinite growth, meeting quarterly goals, and the looming threat of the Orlando Product Expo.

The singer, a member of middle management trying to make their way up the corporate ladder, gleefully abuses his power at every turn in a way that just barely rises above the cruelty of the real world. After gleefully terminating employees that he felt wronged him in one song, taunting them for drowning in medical debt, he stresses the company's benefits when trying to retain an employee on another track. He bullies employees for not having an executive-level image thanks to their families, but then we'll hear him stumble through the kayfabe of corporate America as he himself struggles to decide if everything he's doing is real or even matters.

I think that's where I enjoy the album the most. As the real-world, barely-literate elite toasts itself as kingmakers yet show they are incapable of an original, salient idea, this album plays all of corporate world as the theater it is. It isn't subtle, it isn't deep, but it is brazen in the best way possible.

Zero disrespect to the musicianship as I love the music itself throughout the album (especially the riff starting "Business Lunch" as it transitions off of "Failure to Execute"), but the lyrics and strange delivery are what won me over so that's where my focus is!

Anyway the album is just shy of thirty minutes, so if you like weird shit then I can't recommend it enough. "Growth Opportunities," "Unlimited Breadsticks Unlimited Power," "Failure to Execute," and "Orlando Product Expo" are probably my favorites, but I usually end up just playing the whole album straight through. FFO: Gwar, maybe Municipal Waste? Metal that doesn't take itself seriously.

Bright Sunshine are a Tempe-based noise rock power trio that adopted the costumes and lingo of corporate ladder climbers - the most evil bloodsuckers of them all. Their second album Executive Power Supreme will be released on July 11th through Reptilian Records.
