I dunno if Briana would be searchable. It’s too bad Brigitte doesn’t have a proper hero name. I was jokingly calling them Tank Girlfriends in my head but it doesn’t fit how we tag everything else in Overwatch.

Maybe Brihana would be more searchable? Briana/Brigana feels like Ana instead of Hana. And Brihana has a similar word sound to Briana, you know?

Reconnecting with Family: 1, 2 and 13

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?

This one is a pretty loaded answer. First, I’ve been working on this WIP since 2009 and it’s tied to reading my first crossover fics in Sept 2008. The big pull back then, at least for me, was the Real Family section of fanfic. Taking one character who has no/crappy, parents/family members from one fandom and having them/or the reader find out they have a family member from another fandom. It might sound a little silly, but done well and at times handled carefully, they are frick’n awesome. 

Second, the first x-over fics I read were from the Buffy fandom. I fell in love with a certain Father Character, I had read about several times.

So, yes, it’s been done, but Buffy and this certain father (don’t want to give anything away) are so similar, yet different, that they fit perfectly and it makes sense that so many people like writing it. Though, I had to come up with a believable (and different) reason (for me) why Buffy’s mom, Joyce, had kept the secret for so long. So, in figuring that out, my brain veered off a bit, and that in turn branched more ideas that spread out this small idea into an entire multi-fandom spiderweb of fun…or at least it should be, if I do it right. ;p 

2. What scene did you first put down?

Well, for this particular story in the ‘verse…I actually think it was the first scene with Buffy in her room, looking at the phone–as weird as it sounds. I usually leap frog back and forth all over my writing–that’s why, while I only have one chapter posted (of this story), I have about 2-3 dozen half-done chapters spread through out the whole series. I think, once I figured out the motivation behind Joyce keeping her secret and went down the rabbit hole of creating a huge chunk of the ‘verse, I was finally able to picture the scene.

Note: A prime example of why I have to write notes & timelines, make maps and lists and look through pictures for hours, days, and sometimes weeks before I write a byte of actual story. I need as much of the big picture as possible.

What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading? 

I have a playlist that I listen to whenever I write in this ‘verse. Songs that will be either specifically used or referenced in some way…mixed in with some generic songs that just remind me and help me get into the characters’ mindsets. It’s on shuffle usually just to keep me focused on the story and not on the 17k things running trough my head or anything going on around me. I distract VERY easily, so the smallest thing can start a tangent. I’m very like the Dog in the movie Up, that way. I call it my “Squirrel Brain” (Not to be mixed up with that fact I’m Squirrel to my brother’s Moose–totally different thing, lol.)

Though, at this time, in the story…I don’t have anything on hand. But I tend to equate Sad Buffy with Sarah McLachlan or Michelle Branch, because of some of the biggest sad moments in the series they played their music and it’s just stuck. If anyone reads this story and comes up with something they think fits, I’m always open to suggestions.

Just keep in mind for this story, that Buffy learning about Joyce’s secret is going to throw her life for a loop, during a time when she’s already going through a crap storm of a roller coaster. So…yeah, very WHUMPY.

What's more fun to write? Gen or ship?

Well...since I am writing my first ship fic right now...and learning a lot about my characters' strengths and weaknesses in a world we might not get to see them in...and, of course, there are obviously aspects that heighten the experience...

...but I also REALLY like to write Gen. Goofy, cracky scenes...bickering/banter scenes... Especially when it's a crossover when one group is trying to understand the other's shorthand/shared history, because it can literally be like learning a whole new language...the looks on their faces, just crack me up.

Then there's Gen whump...I've always liked to figure out why people do the stuff they do or don't do. Whump has a lot of that to deal with, the masks people wear, for good or bad, for self preservation or the protection of others. It's all very interesting to me. Especially when I can get a whumpy character to loosen up and let someone in, whether as a friend or something more.

Now...to answer the question...right now, this minute, I'm gonna have to say...SHIP! Because it's the new story running thru my mind and new stories are always fun.
