Day 86 of #100DaysOfWriting
INT. STRIP CLUB - NIGHT
DESTINY (20′s, wide-eyed) walks into the strip club for her first day on the job. JERRY (40′s, sleazy) greets her from the bar.
JERRY Destiny, sweetheart, over here.
Destiny enthusiastically walks over to Jerry.
DESTINY Jerry! Thank you again for giving me this opportunity to...
JERRY (interrupting) Yeah, yeah, yeah. Listen, how many people you got coming tonight?
DESTINY (confused) Uhm...I’m not sure.
JERRY You’re not sure? Didn’t you promote?
DESTINY Well...yeah, I told a couple of friends but I didn’t ask for RSVPs or anything.
JERRY Well, if you don’t know how many people are coming, how am I supposed to know how much stage time you should get?
DESTINY I just assumed we all got to dance the same amount.
JERRY Well that wouldn’t be fair, now would it?
Jerry takes out a cigar and lights it.
JERRY Take Cinnamon for example. Not only did she sell all 20 of her pre-sale tickets, but she also got 6 other confirmations. That’s 26 people coming to see Cinnamon. You think it’s fair that you and her get the same amount of stage time?
DESTINY I mean, I just thought that there would be a built-in audience. I didn’t know it was the dancer’s responsibility to fill the seats.
JERRY So who’s responsibility is it?
Jerry blows a cloud of smoke in Destiny’s face.
DESTINY (coughing) I dunno...the clubs?
JERRY The club? You mean the venue that’s letting you dance for free? Didn’t you just thank me for this opportunity?
DESTINY Well, yeah, but I kind of thought that the audience was included.
JERRY Listen, I don’t know how they do things in Indiana, or wherever you’re from, but here in the big city, Tulsa, we try to be fair. Meaning, you work for your share.
DESTINY Ok, I’m sorry, Jerry. I’ll make sure to bring more people next time.
JERRY If there is a next time. Now go get ready. You’re going first and you’re only gonna dance to one song.
Destiny walks into the green room, tail between her legs. An actual cat’s tail prop.
JERRY Jesus, these new kids are killing me.
Jerry starts counting money as he puffs from his cigar.
FADE OUT
