It was a move that blindsided most of MI6. Of all the people they thought would turn on them, Q was pretty far down the list. Hell Mara herself was higher up that list in most people’s eyes. (Including her own, she has more loyalty to Q than the whole of this stupid agency and she has plenty of reasons to not want to stay without her boyfriend.) She knows she’s racing the clock on this one, going rogue herself just a short hour after Q did, ignoring her orders to stay out of this due to her emotional attachment, but she knows the double-oh sent on this mission has a kill mission and her stupid lover has some questions to answer before she decides if she’s going to let the agent finish their mission or not. 

She manages to catch up to her possible ex, less than two hours after she vanishes herself. She steps through the portal behind him and before he gets a chance to speak himself she’s cutting off with a cold, “If I ask you to explain why am I going to get an answer or are you going to lie to me again?

It’s not often mortals summon her for a favor. This mortal has always interested the Goddess, ever since he first came into MI6 and thus her watch. But just because she’s watched in the shadows for the past years, doesn’t mean she ever expected this. “Tis not often I am called upon by a mortal, tell me what has been so terrible that you’ve called upon the Queen of Nightmares for a request?” She asked melting out of the shadows behind the man.

Mara has done a lot of truly awful things in her life but she still feels like she’s undeserving of this particular form of torture. Not only had Moneypenny kicked her out of six in the middle of some very interesting work, but had also told her that she was going on a blind date with someone at some expensive restaurant on Valentines Day. (Personally known to Mara as the most useless annoying holiday ever.) Mara wouldn’t have even bothered to dress up or even be here had Moneypenny threatened her with nothing but missions in sandy countries for the next six months if she didn’t.

Which was why she was standing on the sidewalk idly playing solitaire with one hand on her phone and holding up an umbrella with the other while she waited for whoever she was meeting to show up.

Okay universe you’ve made your point, you really fucking hate me. Mara thought as he said he was from MI6. Why did agencies always come back to haunt her? Surely her work with SHIELD would mean no one would trust her in one ever again.

“Mara works fine, it’s just the ‘Jane’ part I take issue with.” She said shifting her coffee so she could open the file, taking care that her jacket kept her wrist with the burning numbers covered. No sense in giving more information to him than what he already knew. “You do know that I only have a bachelor’s degree in physics right? Surely MI6 would want someone with at least a master’s if not a doctorate.” She said glancing over the file.

Mara had idly been watching her clock tick slowly down all day. Mostly out of the boredom that came between jobs. (Not she’d ever in her life admit curiosity in who it was.) She would just say she truly had nothing better to do than watch the annoying little numbers on her wrist tick down as she drank the vile coffee the diner down from her apartment served. She watched as a man entered the diner and walked towards her table as her numbers ticked down. In an act that looked like her just taking another drink of coffee she shifted her jacket so the numbers where covered just as they started to burn. 

And the first thought that crossed her mind as he opened his mouth to offer her a job was a silent prayer to the universe to finally do her a favor and let this be one sided and easily swept under the rug. None the less she simply said in reply  “Don’t call me by my full name again and I might hear you out. And it depends on who the offer’s from of course.”

Mara laughed as Q drug her out on to the dance floor, stumbling a little but managing to catch herself. All of her normal grace was left behind many many drinks ago. “You know some how I feel with the amount of drinks we’ve both had nether of us are pro dancers at the moment.”
