"Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" is named after the spear wielded by Irish mythological figure Lugh. This spear has had several names, and notably there is no historical support for the alleged name "Brionac."

Why was this card ever legal?!
So, anyway I sent his Earthbound Immortal and his trap card back with one effect. Like seriously this card is freaking disgusting do they not play test these cards!? Why are all the Ice Barrier synchro monsters so busted?!
Rudger: You can’t beat me in 20 turns!
Rebirth: Bold of you to assume your can last that long against me. *Proceeds to win 4 times faster than that*
What happened
Rudger used Mausoleum of the Emperor to summon Uru losing 2000 life points to summon him the loses an extra 3000 to Magic Cylinder. I synchro summoned Brionac and bounced his Earthbound Immortal and trap attacking him directly. He used Heavy Storm to recall his field spell and he could no longer use it. So, then I just bounced his last trap and attacked him directly from the win.
Edit: Not Heavy Storm I meant Giant Trunade.

Brionac/ブリューナク
A female-exclusive weapon appears in SMT1, but this name got my attention initially from Odin Sphere Leifthrasir (Mercedes’ ultimate attack). It made me scratch my head painfully because of lack of non-Japanese source. It turns out to be an invention by a Japanese author of a collection of world mythologies published in 1990 as explained in Pixiv dictionary. https://dic.pixiv.net/a/ブリューナク
The books seem like another unreliable sources employed by the SMT team back then and other Japanese developers subsequently accepted the fabricated name, partially popularized by SMT1. Anyway “Brionac” sounds cooler than “Lugh’s Spear”, don’t you think?
Damn, that’s a good score. So the offender is Truth in Fantasy volume 6:
I swear I’ve talked about the Truth in Fantasy series before but it doesn’t look like it. I intended to have a sidebar about them in the Odin article but I either ran out of time or it just didn’t fit.
I’m running on fumes tonight so apologies if the rest of this is rambling. Anyway, it’s not surprising. But I feel if it’s not the actual name, using it only serves to misinform. Its soft influence is already being felt in English, as Brionac is stated as the spear’s name on this Wikipedia page. This volume was published in 1990, way ahead of SMT1.
I mentioned earlier about my hunch that PIG Orcus may have been influenced by one of these volumes, as the time frame fits. But a hunch is all I currently have, as it’s quite challenging to even begin combing through these books’ contents from Google searches alone. Closest I’ve gotten is these guys:
They look incredibly D&D, though. Here’s a JP Wikipedia list of most of the volumes, and judging by the names (there are multiple volumes for “fantasy world inhabitants”/ 幻想世界の住人たち) and the few contents I’ve been able to glean, these almost seem like they were intended to supplement pen and paper RPGs. What I’m expecting to see in one of them is Orcus as a pig-king, though sans the tyrannolizard grandeur Kaneko gave him.
I also thought I had the perfect lead in this Demon Encyclopedia from the series:
Orcus, Hades, Mishaguji-gami, Mishaguti-gami, and Killer Crown?? But it’s too good to be true, as this one was published in 2000, so SMT may have already contaminated it. Optimistically, it could just regurgitate old info from previous volumes. Here’s to hoping someone else can be committed to buying these books to find out, ‘cause I sure ain’t!
