Apparently the BBC are struggling to attract younger viewers (16-34) these days...
And sure, part of that might be rebellion against the obviously weak and fawning news coverage during the election, and generally toothless political comedy regarding the real villains in the country...
But in terms of pure programming, I'm going to go against the grain and say the BBC does have some good stuff on it, especially on the iplayer which has BBC3 content on it still being newly made.
The major issue in my eyes is one of approach. The BBC as an organization seems to have forgotten that rather than existing as a monopoly, it is pitching itself to an audience - and in that regard, heavily dropped the ball on branding and selling with the access requirement being a fixed price £150 per year that only sells in 'per year' size.
Make it a tenner a month and I'd gladly throw them 30 quid in the autumn to legally watch Drag Race & Dr Who. But there's not a snowball's chance I'm shelling out quadruple that for 9 additional months on the offchance there'll be something on I want to watch.
And on that note, I feel like that's also a problem with their approach. I don't know about you guys, but I don't watch (tv) shows or movies every night. Once or twice a week, sure, and then I might watch a bunch. But tv doesn't, in the 2020s, or even the 2010s, have a monopoly on entertainment in a gaming, YouTube & social media age. I feel like the BBC also hasn't twigged that - that £150 per year for a max of 8 evenings' viewings per month is immediately less attractive than it would be to someone who plans to watch tv every day.
What's the solve? To me, the obvious easy fix is funding model - making it opt-in/opt-out immediately makes you accessible to lower incomes and casuals, rather than relying on what's essentially a 'BBC' fandom right now (watch this post get adult content flagged for that phrase...) and excluding all others.
And tbh if news reporters could actually do their jobs properly that would also gain you back a hell of a lot of goodwill. Who knew a certain demo would stop watching when you made us always the butt of the joke on your actual serious content?!
