This lot was selected for the exhibition Silver Speaks: ‘From Idea to Object’ at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The year-long exhibition was organised by Contemporary British Silversmiths, marking its 20th anniversary. Featuring Britain’s leading designer silversmiths, the work celebrates silver in contemporary life, combining innovative thinking with excellence in design. Using traditional and cutting-edge silversmithing techniques, the pieces demonstrate the exceptional levels of creativity and skill in British silversmithing today. Lot 491 STUART CAIRNS: ‘TO MAKE A THING’, FIVE-PIECE UTENSIL SCULPTURES IN SILVER FORMED FROM FOUND OBJECTS London 2015 Titled ‘To Make a Thing’ Utensil Set. The handles being found objects with silver fabrications, comprising: a screw, window wiper reinforcement, found steel, plastic razor handle and driftwood with linen thread binding, silver left either oxidised or enriched, length of the longest piece 19cm, weight total 67gms. Stuart Cairns studied silversmithing and jewellery at the University of Ulster, graduating in 2000. He would later return to complete a master’s degree in 2006. His work makes use of pieces that he photographs and collects along the County Down coast, and it features in both public and private collections, including the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The Ulster Museum.
