Music Documentary ''Live Forever: The Rise And Fall Of Britpop''

Britpop is a subgenre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom. Britpop emerged from the British independent music scene of the early 1990s and was characterised by bands influenced by British guitar pop music of the 1960s and 1970s. 

The movement developed as a reaction against various musical and cultural trends in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly the grunge phenomenon from the United States. In the wake of the musical invasion into the United Kingdom of American grunge bands, new British groups such as Suede and Blur launched the movement by positioning themselves as opposing musical forces, referencing British guitar music of the past and writing about uniquely British topics and concerns. These bands were soon joined by others including Oasis, The Verve, Pulp, Supergrass, Space, Sleeper and Elastica.

Britpop groups brought British alternative rock into the mainstream and formed the backbone of a larger British cultural movement called Cool Britannia. Although its more popular bands were able to spread their commercial success overseas, especially to the United States, the movement largely fell apart by the end of the decade.

Live Forever: The Rise and Fall of Brit Pop is a 2003 documentary film written and directed by John Dower. The documentary is a study of popular culture in the United Kingdom during the mid to late 1990s. The focus of the piece is British popular music (Britpop), which underwent a resurgence during the mid-1990s and then seemingly retreated with similar haste towards the end of that decade. The political landscape of the time also features. Much is made of Tony Blair and New Labour's efforts to align themselves with the distinctly British cultural resurgence that was underway. The documentary features a number of prominent UK musical and artistic figures, but relies heavily on contributions from Noel & Liam Gallagher of Oasis, Damon Albarn of Blur and Jarvis Cocker of Pulp. Other contributors include 3D from Massive Attack, Louise Wener from Sleeper, fashion designer Ozwald Boateng and modern artist Damien Hirst.

Courtney Love peeing on Damon Albarn and Justine Frischmann's doorstep, instigating Oasis rage, and naming the Seattle musicians with the most “Jarvis Cocker-y” dance moves.

Marco Collins had a massive influence on what Seattlites heard on the airwaves in the 90s as a DJ on 107.7. The End. The Good Mixer recently sat down with the man, the myth, the legend to get his take on all things britpop.

What’s your favorite britpop memory? Could be a concert, a song, music video or a moment in time…

There were a couple moments. When I had Oasis on the air and even though I was warned not to ask them about Blur, I did anyway and things BLEW UP! Liam and Noel going OFF! Everybody had problems with those guys but I loved em. I also saw Oasis at the Reading Festival in the UK when they only had "Live Forever" out. They were fresh "it' kids. That show was phenomenal.

  In addition to the Oasis dudes, we know you met many icons of the britpop era such as Elastica and Blur while you were a DJ on 107.7 The End. Tell us about that…

Yup, this is one of Blur's first appearances on the radio in the states ever! Look how young we all were! The whole whirlwind of Damon and Justine (Elastica) was also awesome. I remember Courtney telling me how she was envious of their newfound "couple" fame and went to their flat and peed on their doorstep. HAHA! I ended up telling Justine and the war of words began.

  If someone had never heard of the genre and you had to pick a song for them, what would you choose?

The quintessential britpop song?

Hmmm… I mean, I think for me it would be Blur's "Boys and Girls".

  The media hyped the Blur vs. Oasis feud in the 90s. Which side are you on? Team Gallagher or Team Dan Abnormal?

I'm definitely Team Blur. I like Oasis, but it just wasn't that original. Blur was constantly pushing boundaries and suffered commercially for it…. Until "Song 2"!

  The first ever Jarvis Cocker dance contest will occur at the Good Mixer on 4/17. As an esteemed tastemaker and man about town, what local musician do you think has the best dance moves and could take on the Pulp frontman’s legendary spastic gyrations?

I definitely think David from "Head Like a Kite" could fuck shit up. Maybe Brent Amaker? The Markel brothers for SURE! I've seen those fools dance! Who's that dude that sings for Grave Babies? That guy.

  What are you most looking forward to about the event?

I love Erik Blood. That guy's a genius. Can't wait to see what he spins.
