“that’s cool where’s the radio station?”
So if anyone was listening to my show tonight on WZBT or has been paying attention to me at all since I got to college (or shit, just read my About Me) I’m incoming music director. As a freshman, that’s kinda awesome. Go me.
My little radio station that I like to call home is in the basement of one of the older buildings on Gettysburg College’s campus. It’s pretty run down, and the office itself is kind of a grungy mess, but you know, it’s better than nothing. It functions. I love it. Gotta keep up the edgy vibe, right?
The college doesn’t necessarily agree. The building being old and run down isn’t good for the campus’s #aesthetic of being new and cool and filled with accommodations for everyone!
Side note: I don’t really agree with that... I wanted a historical campus for a reason... and also if you’re literally on a Civil War battlefield (not just any... THE BIG CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELD THAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY REMEMBER MOST OF THE TIME) you kind of want to keep up the historic aesthetic. But that’s my opinion. Back to the story.
They raised a fuckton of money and they’re renovating the building and making it GLOBAL! Also known as the fancy new Global Communications Village. Good for all the international students we have. They put the designs up here. When you’re done watching that video, it looks pretty damn swell, right?
My response, along with a bunch of other people: “That’s cool, where’s the radio station?”
Yeah. No mention of a location for us. That’s not good. We’re one of the oldest clubs on campus and have listeners out to other counties. Sometimes I put it in my Skype chat groups and let my friends from other parts of the country listen. It’s something pretty important. We’ve heard nothing about it from the powers that be, and alumni are seeing the video too and thinking the same things. The very first General Manager of the station reached out to us offering to help.
Apparently shit went down in the 90s that was like this, but I don’t know the full story so I’m not going to fill that in.
Since most of the current executive board is graduating and also older, it’s looking like it’s going to be my (meaning my class’s problem) because no ground has been broken and the plans can probably still be changed. Probably. I’m taking it on as a project to get us a place to go in the future, and get us a spot in that cool Global Communications Village. Because we’re communications. Right? Unless I’ve deluded myself into thinking it. Who the hell knows.
The current plan is just meeting with people up the food chain and looking professional and pretty. If not, I’ll make noise on social media. We’re a radio station. We’re good at noise.
