Presented as part of The Broad’s ongoing discussion series The Un-Private Collection, painter and sculptor Eric Fischl is joined in conversation by comedian, actor, art collector and Fischl’s longtime friend, Steve Martin. Known primarily through his comedy work in television and film, Martin has a longstanding interest in modern and contemporary art. The pair to discuss Fischl’s memoir, Bad Boy, his early career in Southern California, and the inspiration behind his painting and sculpture. The Shakespearian play about love, transformation and survival, is now at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica from April 3 through 19.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. and matinees at 2:00 p.m.

2013 PS Arts Benefit Concert reception at Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA aka 30 seconds of Heaven with the personification of charm, Mr. Darren Everett Criss. The pic play by play… Darren: “Hi, I’m Darren.” Me: Gawks like a simpleton. Brain shuts down upon close proximity of coifed and suited perfection. Defaults to professional mode. Gives Darren the firm handshake but brain still misfiring. Stares at his hand instead of making proper eye contact. Epic Fail in progress. Darren: Recounts some clever anecdote. Me: Mindless grinning and gawking continues. I am mesmerized by his shoulder to waist ratio and the material of his suit. I have no idea what he is saying. Darren: After giving my ensemble the once over, “You look very summery.” Me: Controlling the urge to yell like a banshee at my friend who seems befuddled with my phone snaps my brain back on line. “I tried. I normally wear all black.” Darren: “Well you succeeded.” Me: Criss Charm overloads senses. Back to grinning like a idiot. Reluctantly unlatches arm from around Darren’s waist as I have to get my friend’s phone for his pic. Realize I will be able to stare directly at Darren for a few more seconds as I take pic for friend. Skips happily over to friend. Trip is officially the best idea ever. PS: Glad I spared my friend the tongue lashing as he took the multiple photos posted here because he thought I would like them and saw that my brain had temporarily left the building. My buddy only agreed to come out to CA at the last minute as a special favor but he is now also on the Darren Criss fan bandwagon. When I lamented on the ride back to the hotel on not making proper eye contact and therefore missing an opportunity to get a good look at Darren’s peepers my friend, who is straight and a bit tipsy at this point of the evening responds, “He does has very sexy eyes.” Proof positive that no one is safe from the Criss Charm.

Brandi Carlile @ The Broad Stage - "The Story" i go to a lot of shows by myself...the last time i actually went with someone who's not my ex-wife (my defacto +1) must've been like 3-4 years ago to see ours @ the roxy. my friend hilary hated the music almost immediately, so we ended up doing this awkward 20min dance of "do you want to go?" / no that's ok / "are you sure?" / i'm ok / "we can go if you want" / ok, let's go. frankly, i dont even really like meeting people at GA shows, because it gets in the way of me staking out a good standing spot on the floor. so if you see me wandering around at a concert talking to you, it usually means one of three things:

* i dont care about the band that much

* i got there late and all the good standing areas are taken

* i'm attracted to you and am willing to sacrifice some level of concert enjoyment to see where this goes (charming, isn't it?)

anyways, onto brandi...first time i'd seen her live, the show was incredible, she's a great storyteller. the broad stage was an amazing venue as well...too bad i haven't really gotten into theatre (there's some helen hunt play that's showing there all throughout january that looked mildly interesting). the theatre did have a "no photo/video" policy but i took some anyways. sorry, broad stage. coming back full circle...i went by myself, and somehow had a front row seat right in the middle of a group of four women in their 60s (really i just wanted to mention that i had a front row seat). ...i'm rambling at this point, i should stop here. oh btw, coldplay @ hollywood bowl tickets go onsale next month, so i have a few weeks to debate if i should get a single ticket (which sounds really sad) or a pair of tix, and scramble to find someone to go with at the last minute (which makes me anxious just thinking about it).
