Gencest Bang 2020 has arrived!
‘The Courage of Stars’, by the incredibly sweet shadowhuntingdauntlessdemigod, art by me
“It’s a fifty hour straight drive from Kansas to Alaska. Factor in some stops, sleep, and oh yeah, bad luck courtesy of Chuck himself, and Dean knows they’re looking at probably a week-long drive at least. But it’s not all bad. Long open highways, diner stops, peace and quiet, and a meteor shower Sam mentioned off the cuff sound nice. But then again, a week in the car with a brother fond of chick-flick moments? Dean knows he’s in for a few conversations along the way too.”

Can Sam overcome his anger and disappointment to build something new and exciting with Gabriel and Rowena?
#A1: Sam and Dean as kids, staying with Bobby for their first time. Unaccustomed to staying in a real house, with no cars or people moving a few rooms away, & no background noise, Sam is scared. Dean tells him little made-up stories until they both drift off to sleep.
#A2: The first time Dean drove the Impala more than a mile wasn't on a sunny day like it had been for Jack. For Dean, it was panicking, rushing his brother to the hospital because of a case gone wrong, and his Dad in the backseat trying to stop Sam from bleeding out.
#A3: Dean and Sam are used to their life being an unending line of cases, fights, and apocalypses. But what happens when they just sit watching the world move around them as they sit eating in a bustling park?
#A4: Dean had always taken care of Sammy. That was his job. Always his job. Now, despite everything that had happened, it feels like he blinked and his little brother was all grown up, taking charge and leading other hunters and making a place for himself. Looking back on the years that had passed so quickly regardless of the pitfalls and troubles, Dean was proud of him, no matter what.
#A5: Even though he knew that just outside of the training room and down the hall Lucifer had taken up residence in his room, and God was taking a shower in their bathroom Sam couldn’t find it in himself to make a fuss. Dean asks why. Sam answered. It was just another curveball in their crazy life, something they couldn’t control. So Sam chose in that moment to put it out of his mind and simply train with his brother.
#A6: While Dean flirted with the bartender to no end and threw a devil-may-care smile as he hustled his way through the bar occupants, he knew something wasn't right. He could feel it. At the same time, Sam sat at the bar contemplating his plan to leave. He knew this was what he wanted, to go to school and be more than just a hunter. But it felt wrong. And the disconcerting feeling wouldn’t go away.
#A7: White noise filled his ears. Sam stared at the table as Dean bustled in the Bunker’s kitchen. It’s too quiet. No road noise, no passing cars on the highway beyond the walls. Dean’s hand lands on his shoulder as he asked what was wrong. Sam’s heart pounded in his ears he couldn’t answer. It wasn’t Sam’s home. “Home” was some unfamiliar construct, an illusion. They had no home, just the Impala on the road or dingy motels with broken air conditioning and a squeaky door. It was too quiet in the Bunker, and Sam’s heart was too loud for the thundering silence.
#A8: In the Bunker, sitting down for a solitary game of cards, Dean can’t help but remember teaching Sam to play. Hustling cards and the pool tables, those used to be the money makers when dad was gone and the stash he’d left just wasn’t enough to make it through their father’s absence. Sammy had needed to learn the tricks of the trade but Dean wished it hadn't been a necessity in the first place.
#A9:Dad was right, there’s always another monster out there. And since they know about hunting and how to stop monsters, isn’t their duty to help those who don’t? But sometimes all Dean wants is a home and a steady school for him and Sam. Sometimes he wishes he didn’t have to care about those strangers. (Kid-fic, with Dean around 13 years old)
#A10: Weariness seeps into Sam’s bones; they feel heavier than lead, and can barely lift his head. He looks at Dean to see shock written on his brother’s face. It’s over. Michael is dead, and Dean is still alive. They made it. They didn’t lose everything. No mortal injuries. So why can’t Sam get up?
#A11: Dean is sick, trudging through the job despite his symptoms. Three consecutive hunts in the northern states certainly didn't help his cough one bit. Now that they're home, Sam has to resort to drastic measures: The puppy dog eyes & a crap ton of Z-quil.
#A12: After a harrowing case with John and Dean post-Stanford, Sam snaps. One wrong comment from John was all it took for the words to come spilling out, bitter and strained. Sam’s face twisted as Dean ducked into the lobby to grab a room, and he spun around to face John. ”Like hell, we’re all in this together. You’re the one that shut me out for wanting something normal.”
#A13: While on their way to Mirror enterprises in their search for Jack, Sam and Dean have a much-needed talk. With the added effect of no lies being able to be said between them, the truth...it hits hard.
#A14: After the fire, Dean hardly spoke. But when little Sammy started babbling words himself, sitting on the floor at Bobby's, Dean starts to come out of his shell, bit by bit. Sam’s first real word is ”Dee”.
#A15: After Mystery Spot Sam suffers from a heavy dose of anxiety that he’ll wake up to another time loop, or to Dean dead again. The only way he drifts off peacefully for a time is when he can hear Dean's steady breathing, confirming that his older brother is fine.
#A16: Dean finds mini clown statuettes at a thrift store and purchases them. He leaves them in places that he’s sure Sam will eventually see them (behind a well-used book, behind the lamp by his bed) and knows Sam found another one when through the bunker comes “AHH! DEAN!!”
#A17: Dean: *walking into the Bunker library* ”What's up?
Sam: *with his head in his hands* *groans* I’m dead inside.
#A18: Sam shuddered, his breathing shallow as the chill washed over him. Haunted eyes shut tightly as he rubbed his hands together. They had a job to do, and he wasn’t going to let the memory of freezing hellfire keep him from doing it.
#A19: Dean swallowed, chest tight. Laying in front of him in bright white cardstock with colorful writing, was a Mother’s Day card. Sammy, only six, looked up him with shining eyes and a shy grin.
”It’s for you Dee!”
#A20: Sam whispering ”inconceivable” completely out of the blue with a grin on his face after he and Dean leave a crime scene. Dean's face lights up with a smirk as he mimics the following quote, accent and all.
#A21: Sam and Dean were hunters, plain and simple. When Donna calls regarding a serial killer case, Sam and Dean don't pull their punches. They are protectors, first and foremost, and they’d rather be damned than ignore this case, regardless of the human status of their target. Green eyes shone with cold light as Dean advanced on their target, pistol steady. His head tilted like a wolf gazing upon its prey before his expression hardened into a chilling glare.
”What do you think, Sammy? Make this a happy ’accident’ or turn ’em in for the cops?
#A22: While Dean may be the rock geek of the two brothers, Sam harbors a diverse taste in music that Dean doesn't know the full of. After the slaughter in the bunker, Sam retreats to his music and the old tunes that Jessica used to favor so many years ago. Dean notices.
In 13x5, before Dean went full suicidal, Dean calls Sam out,
Dean: You give me a-a beer for breakfast. You -- you gave me Agent Page, which you always like to be. You -- you didn't whine about me blaring my music the whole way here. And when we stopped for lunch, you ordered me chili fries.
Dean knew something was terribly wrong. Agent Page is a favorite of Sam's, and he has identified by it since season 3. Sam's use of Jimmy Page first was in 3.05 Bedtime stories (Dean's badge read Robert Plant). In 5x6 Dean introduces them as Agents Page and Plant, but Sam uses Robert as his first name this time, leaving Dean presumably as Jimmy Page. And in 10.20 Angel Heart, Dean introduces him and Cas as agents Clapton and Page, but we only see Dean flash a badge from behind, and Cas doesn't present due to distraction. Sam and Dean again use "Page and Plant" in 13.5, triggering Dean's callout (among other details).
Yes, it's very sweet of Sam to let Dean use Page, who they clearly both want to be, but Dean often gives to Sammy because Sam prefers it. That's awesome. You know what else is sweet? In 12.15 when Castiel uses the name Agent Solange, Dean uses the name Clapton again (Sam is Baker this go around, who performed with Clapton at times in Blind Faith and Cream), as opposed to the Zeppelin references. That means Dean synced the Clapton ID to another bandmate, but that also means that Dean had a Clapton ID for himself that needed synced off.
10.20 is the first and only other use of Clapton.
Dean likely tossed the Page name to Castiel, despite it being in his favorites list and a scuffle match with Sam over the use of the names. Because you share things you love with people you care about, even if Castiel probably didn't have full concept of the value of that yet. He probably did by the time he got the mixtape, seeing as Page is the leader of Led Zeppelin.
And that's the sweet iced tea.
Too tired to go cut all the episodes into gifs and I doubt this particular set exists but you can check the ep numbers if you doubt me.
