A Cloud for Climbing Interview // Tight Eyes Tie Dye Review

In the barren wilderness of Arizona, something beautiful is growing. It is Phoenix based artist, A Cloud for Climbing aka Brock Lefferts. Not only is his music beautifully dreamy but he makes amazing art as well. It is hard to find an artist who's graphic work and music are on exactly the same level, and it's an amazing thing with Brock especially because he is one of my personal favorite designers. When I am designing, often times I look at Brock's work and draw inspiration from it, hoping that someday, my work will be like his.

Mr. Lefferts just released his nine track album, Tight Eye Tie Dye and it doesn't disappoint one bit. With beautiful soundscapes and a dreamy atmosphere, this is the perfect soundtrack to one's life. But not their ordinary life, no. The life that you live when you are sleeping. The soundtrack to your dreams. It has an adventurous tone, a tone of doing something so unbelievable that you could only pursue it within the confines of your vast mind. Fly over the highest mountains, dive into the deepest seas, and climb the most beautiful clouds.

Hey man! Thanks for taking the time to talk! How are you?Hey man! Thanks for taking the time to talk! How are you?

Thank you for having me! I'm a big supporter of what you do and happy to be involved. On a standardized scale of 1-10, I'm floating in between the 8-10 range right this second.

You have been making music for quite some time now! How long have you been creating and how did you get your start?

I've been playing music for as long as I can remember—starting with piano lessons before I could read. About 13 years ago, I started playing guitar and drums and began getting into music production and recording to record the various bands I was in at the time. Being a multi-instrumentalist and having all the recording gear that I needed naturally led to recording solo music on the side. It's slowly evolved to where I am now with a complete studio and a new record!

A Cloud for Climbing is a beautifully original name! Where did it come from?

Thank you! The name was brewing in my head for a long time, and I can't pinpoint the exact moment when I decided that A Cloud for Climbing was going to be the one. Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed, I imagine myself floating up in the clouds and looking at everything from a far distance. It helps me to remember how small and insignificant we are here on Earth and in the Universe. That idea with the great rhythm and alliteration of "A Cloud for Climbing" made me fall in love with the name. I plan on keeping the moniker with me as long as I'm making music/art on my own.

When thinking of great electronic music scenes, Arizona is not one of the first places to come to mind! How is the music scene in The Grand Canyon State?

A Cloud for Climbing started up in a small mountain town in Northern Arizona called Flagstaff. Flagstaff is exactly the opposite of what comes to mind when you think of Arizona... It's more like a Colorado city than anything. Lots of trees, snow, and mountain adventures. Because Flagstaff is mostly a college town that is constantly recycling a large portion of its population, there are always new music coming through town. It's a beautiful, super inspiring place to be. I've been living in Phoenix for the past 3 years now, and it has give me the opportunity to take the organic, natural vibes of Flagstaff and bring it to a wider audience.

You just released your debut album, Tight Eye Tie Dye. How long has this release been in the making and what was the inspiration behind it?

Back in 2012, I committed to a year long project where I released a finished song every month of the year. Tight Eye Tie Dye is the refined version of that year-long project. I've always had this idea for A Cloud for Climbing to exist somewhere in between a dream world and reality, and I think the music onTight Eye Tie Dye accomplishes that. Tight Eye Tie Dye is that sensation of looking at the sun then quickly closing and rubbing your eyes—when you see those shapes and colors shifting around behind your eyelids. It's something that exists in your head—and your head only—but it's a very real sensation. It's a personal experience that nobody else will have in the same way.

You have opened for acts such as Baths, New Young Pony Club, and El Ten Eleven. What has it been like sharing the stage with such amazing artists?

It has been extremely encouraging! It's awesome to perform with these big touring acts and to realize that they are no different than anyone else. They've all been very passionate about their music and sharing that experience with others. All very cool people with incredible performances.

Not only do you make beautiful music, but you also do incredible design work. What role has design played in your life and how does it coincide with music?

Thank you! I've been doing both design and music for so long now that the two have mostly melded together. I can see a ton of cross over between the different mediums. When I listen to music, I see visuals in my head that reflect the qualities of the song. When I look at artwork, I've got beats going on in my head to match. I think that a lot of people wish that I could silence that part, because I end up making music on anything around me, which is usually a desk or my body. I'm noisy, haha.

Like the song-a-month music project I did in 2012, I'm currently in the middle of an art project where I'm creating and releasing a new piece of original artwork every single day this year. It's an overwhelming undertaking, but I've never felt more creative in my life. Check out the project on tumblr, facebook, and instagram.

If you could be doing anything you wanted with your life right now, what would you do?

Step 1: Do what you love. Step 2: Love what you do. If I wasn't doing exactly what I wanted, I'd have to change something! Constantly growing as a person, artist, and musician is all that I want and need.

What are some of your biggest musical goals?

I'd love to write a soundtrack to a movie someday. I try to write music has a cinematic quality to it without the need for visuals, but writing to somebody else's vision and helping to bring that to life would be a dream come true.

If you could collab with anyone in the world, who would you choose?

Tough to say. I'd love to collaborate with a classical composer like Max Richter and turn some of his beautiful orchestrations into some big beats, haha.

What can we expect from you in the next year?

I'm planning on doing some weekend tours outside of Arizona in the next year. I also have a music video that's almost complete and a ton of new music in the works. This project is just getting started.
