Victoria Steemreed for Kitsu!
Rose: Flip your everything
Rose stands as still as ever as she stares at the screen of her phone, at the red lettering Strider was known for using. Right now, though, the letters are blurred and mixing with her own purple words, creating an odd blend of color. Her eyes are filled to the brim with tears that slice trails down her fair skin and onto the smooth touch screen that she thumbs, as if trying to wipe the words away, make them disappear. John is dead.
John is dead.
She imagines Dave saying that, words harsh but with that slight tinge, only the slightest tinge of sadness and woe and pain and anguish. He'd watch her with the most steely of eyes but behind those shades, they aren't steely. They're filled with pain and brimming tears that only the tinted lenses can cover. Suddenly, his voice melts and she hears her mother.
"Sweetie," she said as she pulled her daughter from one of her nightly loads of math homework, "there was an accident."
Fuck, she could remember the look in her mother's eyes.
"Your father was coming home from work, and the roads weren't iced..."
Yes, it was cold that day, Rose remembers. She locked herself in her room and the nanny brought her a steaming mug of hot chocolate minutes before her mother entered the room. Rose had been young, but intelligent. A prodigy, they labelled her, skipped two grades, two. Now in grade eight, meant to be grade six, she learned of her father's death.
"He was gone on arrival."
She remembers screaming. She remembers her knees going weak, her body shaking. Her skin met the carpet and the tears came like water flooding through a broken dam. Her voice was gone for a week.
Suddenly, whispers mix with the flashback. Angry, mischievous, snarling, laughing. She doesn't care. Rose turns her head to the ceiling and feels her eyes rolling back slowly, her breath catching in her throat, choking her. She speaks in gurgled tones and words even she doesn't understand at the moment. The light around her seems to melt away and she's encased in darkness and everything's dark oh god where did the light go no no NO GET AWAY DEMONS DEMONS-
Suddenly she gasps and is brought back by the voice of her maid.
"Miss Lalonde?"
That tone. That fucking tone.
Slowly, Rose turns her head to the maid, eyes slightly wider, slightly darker around the edges. The maid looks startled, but splutters out some words.
"There's been an accident."
Oh.
"Your mother's been taken to the hospital, she wasn't breathing..."
Oh.
"Get out." Rose whispers, and she supposes the maid can't hear the ever slightest whisper of ANOTHER voice, the slightest of other-worldly echoes.
"Miss Lalonde-"
"GET OUT!"
But oh, not in the natural way, no no nonononononononono.
Rose lets out a shriek and there are tentacles, so many tentacles, snaking around her and NOW everything is darkening, light is nil and they wrap around the maid. They constrict and she explodes into an odd black mist, gone, forever. Rose is trembling, and outside, clouds of an unnatural black are beginning to cover the skies, block out the sun. They don't stop in Rainbow Falls, but they cover the state, and then the states next to it and, like poison, tendrils of clouds beginning to spread, proliferate, and block the skies. The house around Rose shakes as the ground trembles with an earthquake and everything goes black as Rose continues to scream. The room around her becomes torn to shreds. Tendrils wrap around and cocoon her, and she's back. They have what they've wanted for so long, so long.
In her cocoon, Rose stops screaming. Instead, she laughs.
Just laughs.

==> Mada: Contemplate things
You've been parked outside of the apartment building for a little over half an hour. You stare at the steering wheel and you can hear Dog panting and Equus talks at you, but nothing is registering, just the fact that you're here and it's the first time you've seen Karkat since he started dating his boyfriend. He'd already yelled at you on the drive here. How would you take it if he called you here, just to do that? What would you do? Get sick, get mad, cry, punch someone, punch something, just do something?
Goddammit, you can still remember when he told you he had feelings for you and you couldn't muster up anything back.
Now look at you.
Sick to your stomach just to see him now that he's happy. He shouldn't be happy like that without you, and you know what he said, that he would stay, but how could you believe that when you watched your father get pulled out the door in handcuffs, screaming at you that he'll be back for you, that he's not going to leave you.
How could you trust anyone after that?
You look up at the apartment and take it in and it's a really nice complex. It puts your home to shame. There's another thing his boyfriend has over you. There's another thing that is probably on Karkat's checklist against you. You drop your hands from the steering wheel and lean back. Equus stops talking at you.
Eventually you turn to face him, meet his eyes, and you bend in to kiss him, because you need some sort of encouragement, you need someone on your side, but you don't even think Equus is.
Leaning away from him, you mutter that he stay in the car and pull out your phone, stepping out of the car. It's somewhat chillier that night. Leaning on the car, you call Karkat, and you wait, letting the phone ring. When Karkat answers, you tell him you're outside, and you hang up before he can answer. You don't want him to yell at you. Not when the idea to leave is so prominent.
But you couldn't do that to him, you could never do that, not when he said he needed you, you're always there for him. Eternally his, no matter if he tossed you aside, you're his.
