So we didn’t manage to hold on to the Yakuza much. On the upside, Night Leaper managed to pop the hatch on a tank and murder its crew. A few phone calls later, we had an all-dwarf tank that had been ‘liberated’ from Aztlan.
It was about this point that the Fist and nearby friendlies started taking sniper fire. This annoyed her. She charged the building the snipers were nesting on; it was guarded by 11 hellhounds, plus handlers. (Fortunately, the GM kinda underused the critters, specifically not leaning on powers overmuch.)
The Fist kicked her Reaction boost in, and she danced. Most of a session’s worth of combat later, the handlers were all dead, so were several of the hounds, a bunch of the others had been thrown into the elevator (and it had gone into emergency lockdown due to weight and sudden impact), and she had suffered... one bite on the arm.
She took the other elevator as high as it would go, and went up to the roof. Several snipers were surprised, but two were not. One of those two got punched off a roof before he could react. The other threw a grenade. She kicked it off the roof, then punched him off of it. A few rounds later, most of his friends joined him, one surrendered and got knocked out, and the Fist left the building, plus grenades. Cleanup crews would later be extremely confused by the notes on the elevators: “HELLHOUNDS HERE” and “THIS ONE SURRENDERED.”
Checking in with command, she got some terrifying news: The broadcast tower, the one her girlfriend was hacking from, was under attack, with heavy enemy reinforcements inbound. And the fastest transport available was... a donkey.
It was undignified, but it got the job done: The Fist arrived at about the same time as the Dwarf Tank... and an Azzie mechanized infantry division, half a dozen tanks plus power-armour and APC support.
The Fist had other priorities, though. She raced right past the brewing confrontation, through a wall in the broadcast building, into the nearest stairwell. Azzie soldiers were surprised to see her there suddenly but happy to shoot at her all the same; she was having none of it. While dodging fire, she parkoured straight past them and up the stairs to Danielle.
Danielle had been shot in the leg but seemed to be doing not too badly, under the circumstances. She had a half-full shotgun and a case of thermite grenades. The Fist got an idea. Giving Danielle her armored jacket, she told her to take as many of the thermite grenades as she could... and then dumped the rest of the case down the stairs on top of the Azzie goons, and punched her way through the floors next to the stairs for an exit. She got Danielle on the donkey and sent it on ahead, following until a tank confronted her in a nearby alley.
Its pilot crit-glitched, and it got itself wedged in the alley with its turret jammed in the window of one of the buildings. Figuring that bought her a few minutes, the Fist went to deal with the next major situation: Dwarf Tank had killed several APCs, but the remaining tanks had put it out of action and set it on fire, and the infantry had them under too much fire to evacuate. They tried toaking a shot with the tank’s main gun, but with the damage to the turret only managed to blow out the base of a lamppost, knocking it over.
Me: Lamppost, you say.
GM: Yes...
Me: Club with extreme reach capable of knocking down Azzie troops by the job lot, I hear.
So into this situation bursts the Fist, wearing nothing but a goddamn tank top and shorts. She grabs a lamppost, bowls over as many Azzies as she can, and generally makes a nuisance of herself. They try to shoot her, but due to the way they were surrounding her and her ridiculous dodge, the only soldiers they land hits on are their own. (Four. Critical. Glitches.) Several are killed. In the confusion, Dwarf Tank’s crew slips out and around the corner, where they find... another tank, pinned down and ripe for boarding. They kill its crew, board it, and just fuckin’ ram through the building that was giving them trouble. It leans ominously as they gun it out of there.
Me: So... are any of the dead soldiers roughly my size?
GM: Um... sure. One is.
Me: And these are, as you said, mechanized infantry. In power armour. How heavy?
GM: Heavy. There are several inconvenient holes in the helmet, though.
Me: *predatory grin* Excellent. I don’t need the helmet.
So the Fist grabs the her-sized corpse and retreats... through a load-bearing member of the building that Dwarf Tank 2.0 just rammed. It shudders... and collapses toward the Azzie troops, killing a bunch of them and effectively removing three tanks from the action. She uses the rubble for cover while she dons the power armour; she leaves the helmet open, and is forced to remove an arm to accommodate her ridiculous cyberlimb.
Three more tanks come bearing down on her. They try their main guns. She dodges. They try their machine guns. Her new armour shrugs them off. One of them tries to run her over. She decides “irresistable force vs immovable object” decidedly in favour of the latter, by punching a good chunk of their engine block into their cockpit. She repeats this with the second tank; the third pulls away, forms up on Dwarf Tank, and begins repeating “Revolution! Down with capitalism!” until we stop listening to their comms.
While this has been going on, Danielle has suffered far worse blood loss than expected, been recovered by Lex (our hacker/samurai), and made it to the hospital.
It’s about now that we get a message over military channels. There’s been an explosion in the vicinity of the hospital.
The Fist jumps on to Surrender Tank and tells her friends to get there. They do. An APC gets in the way. This makes an excellent loyalty test. Her new minions prove themselves, barely hesitating before blowing it away.
They get to the hospital to find it surprisingly intact; while they were en route, Lex has managed to protect it by hacking cruise missiles in flight and sending them off course, finding their source, and reporting it to the Navy for obliteration. She’s a wreck - one of her arms is a mangled pile of metal by this point from fighting her way here, and the other hand has had some reconstructive cyber already today - but she’s saved hundreds of lives.
Danielle is unconscious, but apparently recovering. She’s lost a lot of blood, but not too much, and is being tended to now. Her personal effects are on the table by her bed. On top of them is an odd, small box. The Fist checks it out at GM prompting.
She takes a moment to have a most unsoldierly melt, then receives word that there are more Azzies on their way. She sends the tanks after them... and that’s it. Aztlan is finally pulling out. Amazonian reinforcements are on the way. We did it. We survived.
Lex promptly passes the fuck out. The Fist curls up next to Danielle’s bed and does the same.
Epilogue: Basically all of us are highly decorated heroes. Surrender Tank’s crew managed to survive, are being debriefed, and will have their citizenship fast-tracked; the Fist may have permanent minions. She’s definitely keeping the armour.
Lex’s girlfriend had been keeping a running tally the entire time of how many times her life was endangered by being in Lex’s vicinity. She claimed that Lex owed her a date for every single one. Last we heard they were on a luxury cruise.
Robin got a Pulitzer for amazing war footage.
Night Leaper sold Dwarf Tank to the Yakuza for retirement money and quietly invested it in a farm.
Danielle asked the Fist to marry her. She said yes. Their wedding was officiated by the Khan herself.
