Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart
I was looking for a list of all common-ish (laying) chicken breeds, ranked by broodiness, and I didn’t find that, mostly just a bunch of lists of “5 broodiest breeds” (proceeds to list 5 that don’t lay well, are tiny, you’ve never seen, etc.) But I did find this! Handy Dandy indeed. It’s got physical specs, origin info, egg stats, broodiness, hardiness, speed of maturity, behavior summaries, and more, for over 60 breeds.
Good for comparing, if you’re thinking of getting laying hens. Or if, like me, you’re thinking of raising some backyard mix chicks, and wondering which hens are most likely to do the brooding. (Answer: Buffy the Orpington, or one of the Australorps. Which matches their observed behavior very well.)
It’s broody season! Do you know where your eggs are? Mayapple, black australorp, September 2017.
I swear, people who don't experience broodiness will never be able to comprehend the physical ache it causes, like, I'm genuinely in pain with longing for a child right now
2 gcc's one is sexed as a male, they both regurg for each other, and are being extremely broody. Does this mean the other is a girl? Or will males do this as well? Unsexed one isn't quite a year yet, so I don't really expect to see eggs assuming it is a female. This broodiness is destroying my house
I wouldn’t be surprised if males would do this for each other bu to be honest I’m not sure. Broodiness in general is no fun though and there are steps you can take to make them less...in the mood...to brood. Here’s an article with some tips!
Looking at pictures of my little nephew, sometimes he's so reminiscent of one or other of his parents, and it makes me so curious what a biological child of me and my fiance would be like.
But like... you can't have a child out of scientific curiosity, because you have to raise that child every day of its life for many years, and I am very disabled and not sure how much of a parent I can be, not to mention that I have the female parts of the equation so I'd have to go through pregnancy and childbirth and (probably) breastfeeding...
Somebody invent a way to see into alternate universes so I can see the child I might already have had if I didn't become disabled 👀
Mama hen, October 2017.
A good brooder hen will teach her chicks how to forage for food and water.
After about 10 days, we relocate the chicks with Momma Mayapple and their brooder coop to a meadow area with rotating pasture fencing. Hilarity ensues!
