i agree but i also think yoda’s pep talk and embracing failure was pretty key here? (also, yoda zapping the tree to COVER FOR REY STEALING THE BOOKS. i love yoda.) and the academy destruction to me felt more about “i’ve destroyed the lives of everyone i’ve ever loved through this moment of weakness, better to cut myself off so i don’t hurt anyone else.” and then he just gets more evidence that the jedi have been screwing up the galaxy for decades and decades.
You’ve got good points and I see your perspective (also I love that idea, Yoda torching the tree because he knew Rey had yoinked the books already). I just think there was so much meat that was skipped in Luke’s arc, and that it was skipped because neither Abrams nor Johnson thought it was cool/interesting enough to bother with. They didn’t give me enough reasons for Luke to be how he was to make his reversion back to how he used to be as satisfying as I wanted.
