Happy Birthday to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge! This landmark opened to the public on May 24, 1883, thereby connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn for the first time. Dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” early visitors gawked at its immense granite towers and thick steel cables, not to mention its birds-eye views. The bridge, which took 14 years and around $15 million to complete, remains among New York City’s top tourist attractions and a busy thoroughfare for commuters.
For the months of March and April we are featuring the amazing work of Pierre Denys de Montfort, (1766–1820) a french naturalist, in particular a malacologist, remembered today for his pioneering inquiries into the existence of the gigantic octopus, which was thought to be an old wives' tale, and for which he was long dismissed. This piece “Colossal Octopus” from 1810 is a pen and wash drawing from the descriptions of French sailors reportedly attacked by such a creature off the coast of Angola.
