In June 2018, KHLOARIS programmed, set up and hosted the film@segment of the Freak Flag Fest at Brooklyn Kitchen. The fest was a multi-day, multi-level affair and featured dozens of experimental music acts, including the debut of Mike Watt’s Afternoon Freak (also featuring Matt Mottel and Danny Frankel). There was gourmet food, art installations and more. Our films were programmed around the music acts. We focused on a sort of weird history of New York underground cinema, and had a cross-section of old guard@and new guard avant-garde, with some live 16mm projection and cult/trash film. Here, you’re seeing a crowd watching a new Nick Zedd music video for our friend and frequent collaborator @nylonothropho Our program also featured Troma (and Toxie!) on hand to do a matinee of “Terror Firmer,” as well as Lily Jue Sheng, Julie Orlick, Mike Diana and TFG, Amanda Justice, Zoe Camina and Elyssa Oliver, Dylan Greenberg, Zach Strum and more. We also had two weekend-long large installations via the Horror Boobs and the Millennium Film Workshop. Our friends at Mono No Aware helped out with some 16mm projection equipment.
