Beulah, Michigan's Brookside Inn opened in 1981 and closed in 2015. At that time, the rooms were gutted and turned into apartments. Today, the entire building is for sale for $1.3 million. Based on the real estate listing photos, you would never believe this is the same place as the postcards.

#TBT Interior of Hughie’s Tavern, Pearl River, c. 1935 Postcard, Dexter Press Originally built as a sawmill in the 1850’s, it was converted into an old-English-style hostelry, called the Brookside Inn, in the 1890’s. It was Located on the Muddy Brook near the NJ border. Later, it became Hughie’s Tavern, and then continued as a restaurant with names including Lund’s, the Marque, La Forge, Rye’s, Bartels and Texas. It was demolished in 2009. Thanks to Jim Cassetta for the info. ____ This image was used by Dexter Press to make postcards in the 1930s. Dexter Press was founded by Thomas A. Dexter in 1920 in Park Ridge, NJ. It moved to Pearl River in 1928. Dexter Press moved to West Nyack in 1952. Dexter sold Dexter Press to Consolidated Foods in 1972. It eventually became part of Rockwell International who closed the West Nyack factory in in 1984. The land on which Dexter Press used to sit is where the Palisades Center Mall now stands. ______ This image, like many of the historic images posted here, comes from the HSRC archives. Boutique Hotel in Abbotsford Offers Welcoming Retreat

Over the holiday season we drove up to Kelowna to visit the Anderton clan and decided a stop in Abbotsford on the way back to Vancouver would be in order. We could catch up with some good friends and take a break from the rather stressful highway driving. We booked into a recommended local bed and breakfast, The Brookside Inn Boutique Hotel. The Inn is not far off the highway, but in a country setting, with particularly festive decor and the biggest Christmas tree we’ve saw this year. 

Situated in Pepin Brook Vineyard Estates, Brookside Inn is run by Chris and Sandi Buis, a charming couple who were readily available when needed and completely out of site when not. Will a fews to the local mountains, this area is known for great hiking and birdwatching. Who knew?

The bedrooms have a movie theme (ours was Midnight in Paris) and they are then styled around that theme. The suites are spacious with a sitting area and televison, a soaker tub and uber comfy beds where a good nights sleep comes easy.

The Buis’ were having an open house and invited us to join in, so we of course obliged and got to know a few of the neighbours.

Craving sushi, we went to Hana Sushi, nearby for a couple rolls with our pals Summer and Patrick, who are also recently engaged. Lots to celebrate these days!

In the morning breakfast is served in the dining area, we had a deliciuous plate of fruit atop French Toast and a few good cups of coffee before we departed.
