LAST ONE
Okay, after this I'll probably wait another day or two to see which of the 8 fic ideas has the most engagement and I'll do that one!
Adam joins John and Dean hunting within a year of Sam going to Stanford (Adam is 13, Dean is 24). Adam's mom is killed by something chasing John.
John does basically the same thing he did with Sam by just kind of shoving Adam to Dean to take care of, except he's even more distant than he was when Sam and Dean were young because Dean is a fully fledged adult.
John still expects Dean to hunt as much as possible so Dean gets Adam enrolled in online homeschooling courses and splurges on getting Adam a personal laptop. They start a routine of Adam working on his school work while Dean does research for his cases. John insists on Adam doing training but he's not around to enforce it as strictly as he did when Dean and Sam were kids so Dean does get Adam training, but he doesn't push as hard.
John really isnt around very often, he mainly checks up by phone call or text and meets up with Adam and Dean every few months to check on Adam's progress.
At first Adam is angry and withdrawn but he bonds with Dean fairly quickly. He cries about missing his mom and he rages about John and sometimes wishes he had never come back into her life because she and Adam were doing just fine on their own. Dean comforts him and lets him cry and tries to help him move past his mom's death. Dean remembers all of the times he told Sam to buck up and pushed him harder than he really wanted to because he knew their father would be upset if Dean "babied" Sam and Dean was too young to fight back much or even understand that he shouldn't just regurgitate everything their dad said. Adam starts to see Dean as his dad, not John and Dean feels much the same way.
By the time John goes missing in Jericho in 2005 (Adam is 15, Dean is 26, Sam is 22) Adam is a pro at research, they've found he has a knack for languages so he's become almost fluent in Latin and Ancient Greek and has begun to work on languages like Hebrew and Sanskrit and Aramaic, languages that can be useful in their line of work. He is also a dab hand at hand to hand combat and Dean has gifted him a set of silver throwing knives he keeps sheathed on both wrists and ankles, as well as a pretty decent shot. He does well in his homeschooling courses, but they've definitely stacked them more on ancient history, rather than world history and mythology for English classes to help with hunting, but Dean is really good at math and science and helps with anything he can. Dean tries his best to keep Adams life as balanced as he can and has Adam looking into colleges but makes it clear that he isn't expecting Adam to go if he doesn't want to and if he does want to Dean will get an apartment or a house for the two of them and he'll hunt with wherever his college is as a base of operations.
Adam knows all about Sam and kind of hates him, but he knows how much Dean loves Sam and tries his best to not be dick about it when Dean wants to check on Sam. Dean told Adam everything about Sammy in the first year that Adam was with him, gushed about how he was so smart and how Dean was so proud of him for getting a full ride to stanford but Dean would have done whatever it took to send Sammy to Stanford if he hadn't and he really wanted to go. Dean called Sam every few weeks to check in but Sam tended to be curt and rude and rushed himself off the phone. Dean always seemed down after phone calls with Sam but he never stopped trying to keep in touch, he asked if Sam needed more money and always sent some after a phone call. Adam grew to really resent the way Dean would falter while on the phone with Sam because Dean tried really hard to be a positive and supportive person for both of his brothers but Sam always threw it back in Dean's face. A couple times Adam tried to tell Dean he didn't like how Sammy made Dean sad and Dean insisted it was okay and told Adam how he failed Sammy a lot when they were kids and couldn't take care of him as well as he could Adam now. Adam started to pay more attention to the odd comment Dean would throw out about when he was younger and what their life was like and he really begins to resent Sam for expecting so much more from Dean when Dean was only 4 years older than Sam. He does his best to really appreciate how hard Dean tries to take care of him and he never wants to leave him.
During one of the few times John insisted on taking Adam for a weekend (really just an excuse to test Adam's hunting skills and make sure Dean was keeping up with training like John wanted him to) Dean went to see Sam at Stanford. Adam has no idea what happened when Dean went to visit but he comes back upset. He watches Dean attempt to call Sam once a week for months before he finally gives up. Adam asks what happened and Dean is honest and tells him they got into a fight and Sam told Dean to get out of his life. He tells Adam how he hoped the Sam would cool off after the fight and they could talk about what made Sam so upset but he wasn't answering Dean's phone calls so he suppsoed that was it. Dean wouldn't tell Adam what the fight was about and when he realized that asking just made Dean really sad, he let it go. After that they would make sure to pass throguh California every couple months and Dean would leave money and presents for Sam's birthday or Christmas if either were soon, and Adam never said a word about it.
The fight Sam and Dean had was about Adam. Dean hadn't told Sam about Adam before then because Sam never stuck around on the phone for very long and he could hang up and avoid the conversation easily if he was upset, which Dean figured would be likely. Because of that he also didn't want to have Adam present when he told Sam, but John had made Adam Dean's responsibilty right from the get go. It took a long time before a good combo of Adam being trained enough to not need Dean as a buffer around their dad the entire time, trusting his dad not to hurt Adam if Dean left them alone, and also being close enough to Califnoria that the trip would only be about a day. So he took the time to go and tell Sam about Adam. Sam ends up as pissed as Dean expected him to bed, but he seems most mad at Dean. He tells Dean how he can't believe that Dean would be okay with screwing up another kid the way Sam ended up. Dean insists he's taking good care od Adam and Adam is happy. He tries to explain about the homeschooling and how Adam is adjusting and seems to enjoy all the weird little stops they make along the way like the World's Largest Ball of Twine and things like that but Sam doesn't give him the chance. He basically tells Dean that he and John should have let Adam be picked up by foster care so he'd have a more stable life and the ability to get a good and well rounded education rather than induct another innocent kid into the life they live and how Sam can't even look at Dean and he had hoped Sam turning out so fucked up would be enough of an example for Dean. Then he makes a few mean comments about how Dean is selfish and is so desperate not to be alone he's dragging an innocent kid to his death and tells Dean to get the hell out of his life.
Adam and Dean end up at the Woman in White case in Jericho following their dad's trail. Dean considered calling Sam to see if he'd come help because he really felt all-hands on deck would help to locate their father faster, plus Jericho was closer to Palo Alto than their jobs usually took them and it would be easy to get him out and back to university quickly if needed. Plus he just really missed his little brother. Dean ended up deciding to call Sam first and when Sam's phone rings twice then goes straight to voicemail, Dean's heart broke a bit and he decided to just let it go and continue with just Adam.
Adam and Dean go through the Woman in White case very similarly to how Dean and Sam do in the show. The night they finish the case Dean and Adam have fond a motel a good 50 miles north of Jericho and they're both asleep for the night when Dean's phone starts ringing. Dean picks it up and Sam is on the other end kind of freaking out and not making much sense. Dean manages to get out of Sam that he needs him and Dean and Adam pack up their things as quickly as possible and start back towards Palo Alto to help him.
When they reach Palo Alto, Sam sends a text message with coordinates that lead to a shadier motel than even Sam and Dean used to stay in as kids. Sam is sitting at the table in the motel with a half drunk bottle of cheap whiskey, a random, mostly empty duffle bag at his feet and a gun sitting on the table in front of him, staring but not seeing. His face is blank. When Dean walks in he walks right up to Sam and swipes the gun off the table, stuffing it into his bag and tossing the whole thing to Adam. Adam takes the bag and begins setting their stuff down on one of the beds. Sam is still just staring and not really moving. Eventually Dean says or does something and it sets Sam off. Sam lunges at Dean and tries to punch him in the face. Adam wants to get invovled and pull Sam off of Dean but Dean tells him to back off and it quickly becomes clear Sam is too drunk to do any real damage. He's sobbing so hard he can hardly breathe and eventually he stops trying to hit dean and just grips his shirt and cries and says over and over again how "she's gone, just like mom" Dean knows he won’t get any real answers out of Sam that night so he lets him just cry until he passes out and then he asks Adam to help him get Sam on the empty bed. They get him situated and Dean tells Adam to go to bed. Adam can tell Dean won't be sleeping and wants to ask to stay up too, but at this point he knows unless there's an active case he desparetly needs a second hand for, Adam is required to go to bed to be up and do homework at a reasonable hour. He knows this is somewhat of an emergency, but it's really no different than being suddenly summoned to another Hunter who needs help in the area immediately and Dean had always been strict about his schedule before, there was no reason to think this would be different. So Adam goes to bed.
Next morning Sam wakes up to Dean and Adam sitting at the table in the room, each with a laptop in front of them, coffee, and some kind of breakfast. Sam sits up and Dean looks over at him and offers him a cup of coffee that's still steaming. Sam's head is killing him so he takes the coffee and then hand also hands him some pain killers. Sam mumbles out a thanks and sits at the end of the bed and sips at his coffee, observing his two brothers. This is Sam's first time seeing Adam and he's surprised. He looks nothing like Dean or Sam. Dean is the spitting image of their mother with his blonde hair and more delicate facial features, and Sam had really grown and filled out and he was seeing more and more of their father in himself. This boy looked didn't look like their father at all, so he assumed Adam must take after his own mother. He had dirty blond hair, similar to Dean's but a few shades lighter. His face was soft and round, but thin and he was studying his laptop screen very intently with pale blue eyes. Sam couldn't really tell since the kid was sitting, but he seemed to be just a touch shorter than Dean, but Dean had also said Adam was 14 the last time Sam saw him and that was just over 2 years ago now, which would make Adam 16, so there was a chance he could still outgrow their brother, just as Sam had. That thought made him smirk inside his head just a bit.
Adam asks Sam if he's going to just keep staring and Sam ignored the question and asks what Adam's doing. Adam tells him trig homeworker which surprises Sam. Dean looks up from his laptop and tells Adam to put on his headphone and focus on his homework because he has a test the next day. Adam rolls his eyes and makes a comment about how Dean just wants to talk to Sam without Adam listening in and Dean says "bingo" while Adam slips his headphones on. Sam is weirded out by the fact this kid is not only doing homeowrk, but that his brother knows Adam has a test the next day. Dean turns to Sam and just waits for Sam to speak. Sam ends up asking about Adam's schooling instead of the night before because he isn't sure if he's mentally capable of reliving it.
Dean doesn't let Sam derail the conversation for long, basically just says like "I told you last time I saw you that the kid is home schooled, it's school time for him" He tells Sam he's sorry, but he really needs to know what Sam knows. Sam goes on to tell Dean very clincally and detached that he isn't entirely sure. He explains that he had been in a shitty mood since Dean's call a few days before and last night he ended up getting into a big fight with Jess because she managed to get him to say at least part of his problem had to do with his brother, Jess was curious because she didn't know very much about Sam's family or life before college, but she knew Sam's older brother was important, so she pushed wanting more information. Sam didn't take this well and although he's been a fairly even headed guy says coming to college, his family, family secrets, and the life he had growing up, quickly brought his more hot headed tendencies to the surface and he ended up yelling at Jess. Jess, being a no nonsense kind of person told him he wasn't allowed to yell at her that way and basically kicked him out of their bedroom for the night, telling him to cool off. Sam, upset with himself and feeling guilty for yelling at Jess decided he should have a bit more space, so, grabbed a quick change of clothes (and some weapons he refuses to ackowledge still keeping close at hand) and left for a friends couch who didn't live too far away. At some point in the night he gets a call from Jess, but when he answers all he hears are screams and a loud crackling sound before the call is disconnected. Sam rushes back home and see's smoke coming from a window near where he knkows their apartment is. He pushes past through the crowd of people and through firefighters trying to hold him back and runs up to his apartment, the fire is spreading but it doesn't seem to be getting to close to Sam as he runs/ He just makes it through the door to their apartment, breaking down the door in the process, when he hears Jess's screams and he tries to step into the apartment just as a fire fighter grabs hold of Sam and drags him out back down the hall and out of the apartment. He fought against their hold, wanting to get to Jess and help her even though a part of his brain knew it was already too late, but he's overpowered and dragged out where he breaks down sobbing, which is when he eventually calls Dean. From there, Dean knew the rest.
Dean listened to his brother, feeling awful that there was nothing he could do to bring his girl back, but also dreading what he was about to tell his brother. Sam is crying again by the time he's done talking. Dean stands up and sits next to him on the bed, putting an arm around his brothers shoulders and offering him the little comfort he can. Sam, who had always found some of the most comfort in exactly these arms, allowed himself to just cry and feel and be comforted by the presence of his big brother. As devastated as he was by the loss of his fiancee, there was a part of him that was glad to know that even all these years later of distance and then eventually silence, his brother was still someone he could count on to be there for him and pick him up when he was down. Sam ends up crying himself to sleep again.
Adam hadn't actually started his assignment yet, he was fine for his test, Dean knew that too and there was a good chance Dean knew he wasn't actually doing homework, but he knew Dean wanted to give Sam some semblance of privacy while talking about something so horrible. Adam wanted to listen because he had a feeling there was more that Dean knew than he was currently saying and Adam just wanted to know what was going on. When he woke up that morning he could tell Dean hadn't slept and he had been unsually quiet and withdrawn, he had Adam get started on his school work as soon as he was up and then eventually left to get them coffee and breakfast. When he returned Dean had been on the phone and Adam could tell it was with some kind of police or fire office just based on the way he spoke, but instead of staying and speaking in front of Adam like he usually did, he sat Adam's food down In front of him, gave him a signal to eat and stepped back outside. He stayed outside for another 10 minutes or so and almost as soon as Dean had entireely sat down, before Adam could ask what the call was about, Sam had woken up and Dean obviously wanted to speak with him. So Adam eavesdropped, and now he felt bad. As much as he had come to dislike Sam over the years, he never wanted him to be hurt like this. He may not know Sam the way he did Dean, but Sam was still his brother and if there was anything he had learned from Dean, it was that family should come first. Adam even felt the urge to offer up a hug or a pat on the back or just something to possibly help Sam through his grief, but he also had a suspicion his comfort wouldn't be welcome at this time, so he kept his distance and decided to actually start working on his homework.
When Sam eventually wakes up again, not all that much time has passed, but Adam seems to be done with his homework as he's sitting at the tablet with some kind of obviously old and worn text in front of him, as well as a myriad of other books, all of which Sam can tell are for their Dad's line of work. Before Sam can say anything Dean tells him he needs to tell him something and Dean seems pretty serious so he listens. Dean explains how their father had gone missing, Sam immediately kind of blows up asking why Dean hadn't called and without thinking Dean snaps at him "I did call, you just didn't pick up" which immediately makes them both feel bad. Sam for realizing his brother is right and Dean for throwing it in his brother's face when he knows Sam already feels like shit. Sam just kind of stiffly nods his head and Dean bulldozes through the awkwardness while Adam quietly scoffs to himself. Dean goes back to explaining about how they came out looking for him, the motel room they found in his name, the articles and protective fetishes all over the place, finding his journal, everything. Sam is like okay what does that have to do with me and Jess. Dean hesitates and but end sup revealing that he spoke to the fire chief and the coroners office and Jess has been pinned to the ceiling with a cut on her stomach and the fire had started in the bedroom of their apartment, but so far no one can figure out what accelerant was used. Sam goes quiet and Adam is listening intently so Dean just kind of rips the bad aid off and says he finds it highly suspicious that their dad went missing on a case less than half an hour from where Sam and Jess live and within a week of him going missing, Jess ends up being murdered the exact same way their mother was and he believes that whatever killed their mom, killed Jess.
Later that night as Sam is getting out of a shower, he can hear Dean and Adam talking and overhears Dean telling Adam he thinks they'll have to put off going to the coordinants that their father had left in the journal for a couple more days until they can get Sam settled into a new apartment. Adam agrees and says he'll start doing some research on the area the next morning so they have an idea of where there dad might be. Dean reminds him he needs to do his school work first and Sam can hear the eyeroll in Adam's voice when he's like yeah yeah. Sam walks out of the bathroom and tells Dean that Sam wants to go with them to look for dad. Dean is concerned and tells him that if Sam is strapped for cash for a new apartment that Dean keeps an emergency stash and it should be good for a deposit, first and last on a small apartment. Sam says theres no way in hell he can just go back to school. Dean is still hesitant but Sam insists he wants to go because he wants to find dad and then hunt down whatever killed their mom and Jess with him. He says that he owes it to Jess and he won't be able to live with himself if he doesn't avenge her. Dean and Adam exchange glances but Dean eventually just nods his head and says alright. He tells them both they'll stick around for one more day so Adam can take his test in the morning and they can do some reasearch on the area first. Sam argues they don't know what happened to dad and they could be wasting time Dad doesn't have sitting around, getting irritated and raising his voice. He kind of yells that Adam's test can't be so important they should put off something so important like going to their dad and for the first time in a long time, Dean is not moved by his arguing. Dean looks at Sam with harsh and somewhat cold eyes and very firmly states that Adam needs to take his test, and Dean needs to do research because he isn't taking his two brothers into who knows what blind. Especially when one has been out of the field for 4 years and the other is child which Adam is like "Hey wtf I didn't say anything, why are you bringing me into this" Dean kind of smirks at Adam and tells him to go back to his translations if he's bored enough to but into conversations and Adam goos naturedly grumbles but does end up back at the table, large array of archaic tomes spread all over the table. Sam, who was struck somewhat dumb at not getting his way, scowls but doesn't try to fight with his brother. His brother had rarely ever told him no or not given him what he wanted if he wanted something badly enough, but the few times he did Dean wouldn't be budged. So Sam cast a reproachful glare at the teenager sitting at the table and passive aggressively went to bed
After Sam ends up joining them on the road Adam and Sam clash because Sam is so disapproving of Adam living this way and Adam pretty much hates Sam for the way he treats Dean. Sam is also upset that Dean is still dragging Adam around and Dean refuses to listen to Sam about it as long as Adam is happy. Sam is also just kind of miserable because his fiance just died
I just really want a fic with three of them working together.
anyway, that's all 8 of them!
