The weather was perfect today - the waves were gentle, the sun was shining, and you felt a sense of peace washing over you as you played in the surf near the shore. The water felt divine against your fur, and when you broke through the surface of the water the air kissed your cheeks with a cool breeze.
Days like this were your favorite. Your fellow selkies were further into the water, leaving you with a few peaceful minutes to play and swim on your own, and with the perfect weather, you felt calmer than you had in recent memory. You broke through the surface and turned onto your back, floating on the gentle waves.
You floated for a while, soaking in the sun’s rays until you were a commotion to your right. Your eyes drifted over to see what was happening, landing on a woman that looked panicked. She ran into the water, chasing after a small, floating something that was growing ever closer to you. You scanned the shoreline, looking for any potential threats, but found none.
The water parted easily for you as you made your way to the floating object, the woman still only a little ways into the water. The crying reached you just as you came upon the object, the sound of the sea having drowned it out before.
When you looked at the bundle, your heart leapt into your throat at the sight of a baby, just barely managing to keep afloat in the inflated circle it was placed upon. Immediately, you went underneath it and flipped onto your back, allowing the child to float on your stomach as you carefully brought it back to shore. The crying stopped as soon as you were carrying the child, and you peeked up at its rosy cheeks, and you let out a soft honk, finding the babe too cute to not react to. With those chubby cheeks, pitch black hair, and violet eyes, the baby was perhaps the cutest thing you had ever seen, only rivaled by the young of your own kind.
You floated towards the shore, meeting the woman who was now waist deep in the water.
“Oh thank the gods!” she exclaimed as she scooped the baby into her arms, looking down at you, gratitude shining in her blue-grey eyes. “Thank you, thank you,” she cried, tears streaming down her beautiful face.
You made the split second decision to shed your coat, standing before her on two legs. “You’re welcome,” you said softly, your voice cracking from disuse.
While her eyes were wide, the woman didn’t back away from you. Instead, she moved closer, placing a hand on the skin of your arm that wasn’t covered by your coat. “How can I repay you?”
You shook your head. “There is no need. I’m happy to have saved your little one.”
“Feyre!” a man shouted in the distance, his form approaching you at a rapid pace. You clutched your coat tighter to yourself, unease settling in your gut. “Feyre, why did you leave without-” his words were cut short when he saw you, eyes that matched the baby roving over you curiously.
“Rhys, this woman just saved our Nyxie,” Feyre said, passing the delicate bundle in her arms to the man. “I swear, I looked away for one second and then he was floating out-”
“He’s okay, Feyre, he’s okay,” Rhys soothed, a gentle hand on her shoulder. It was then that you looked, truly looked, at their faces, and you realized that they were the most beautiful couple you’d ever seen. It was no wonder that their child was so adorable. “Is there anything we can do for you?”
You shook your head once more. “I have everything that I need.” Want, though, that was a different story as you stared at the trio, a pang of longing going through you.
“Please, let us do something. Would you like to come for our house for a meal?” Feyre offered.
More time with them- “Yes, that would be lovely,” you said quickly, more than ready to get to know the couple better.
“Wonderful! Our home is only a short walk from here,” Feyre said with a dazzling smile. “And I believe that Nyx has had enough of an adventure for the day, if you’d like to go now.”
You glanced back to the water, spotting a few of your kind poking their head out of the water to watch your interaction with the humans. You gave them a short nod, a promise to return before nightfall. “That would be fine.”
The walk to their home was short, though on your shaking legs, it felt far longer than it truly was. It was one of the cottages you had spied from the waves, decorated cozily. You felt comfortable stepping into the building, though your coat was still wrapped close to your body.
Rhys set to making a meal while you and Feyre sat on the couch, your attentions focused on Nyx. He was such a cute baby, only a few months old. His cheeks were chubby, as well as his arms and hands. Hands that were constantly grabbing at your coat, a bright look in his eyes as he played with it.
You were so wrapped up in the three of them that you hardly noticed as night fell, too entranced to bother paying attention to the time. But once you did notice, your thoughts finally drifted back to your pack, who were likely waiting for you, fear building with each minute that you didn’t return.
“I’m so sorry,” you said, giving Nyx one last pat on the head. “I need to get back, but…” You bit your lip, unsure if you should say your next words but saying them anyways, “I would like to see you again.”
Both of them smiled wide. “We’d like that too, darling,” Rhys said, a comforting hand landing on your shoulder, the warmth of him seeping through your coat.
“How will we find you?” Feyre asked, the slightest hint of worry in her eyes.
“I’ll come to you. If that’s okay, of course.”
“That’s perfect. Come any time, love,” Feyre said, stepping forward to press her lips to your cheek. Your face was flushed as she pulled away, heart thundering in your chest.
You left then, not wanting to accidentally move to far with them before the time was right, when you knew that they want you in the same way that you want them. The entire walk back to the shore your cheeks stayed warm, and just the thought of her lips against your skin sent them flaming once more.
Soon. You would return to them soon.
