This is @iamashtonbell. You will always see him with a back pack on. For HPN Awareness week, i'll share the facts: There are many disease states that can result in TPN dependence and therefore the need for HPN. Ashton's dependence was the result of intestinal malrotation (when the small intestines don't rotate properly in the abdominal cavity properly during utero), which turned into volvulus (the tangling of the small intestine) - resulting in the majority loss of his small bowel, 96% to be exact, had to be resected (cut out), by the time the doctors got to it, during an emergency surgery. So, we make a "Hydration" solution for @iamashtonbell, commonly used for individuals with digestive issue, because it helps their bodies absorb liquid, as opposed to just plain water. The main product is Gatorade 2, G2, by @gatorade. We have to add little bit of salt & equal parts water. He uses about 48 - 64 ounces of G2 a day between his g-tube & what he drinks by mouth. No matter where we go the flavors & sizes are always limited. Which makes us have to do a G2 run about every week and a half. Sigh. But grateful to be able to afford this as well grateful to have a solution that works for him to help keep him out of the hospital!! This is alway the hard part.... my walk back to the room while I wait for surgery to finish & place him in recovery. I'm not sure how long i will be allowed to do this, but every time I'm with him when he has surgery, I hold his hand & talk to him, tell him how much I love him, that I'm close by, etc., until he goes under. Then I have to walk back to the room, through an empty hallway, by myself, leaving me time to reflect what a Gem he is in my life! How fucked up is it that a sick kid was bullied and manipulated by medical professionals to sign away their quality of life. They knew exactly what they were doing. I shouldn't have let that happen.
