BIRDTOBER DAY 27: KIWI (Brown)

The North Island brown kiwi is from the northern Island of New Zealand. Only about 35,000 birds remaining, it’s still the most common kiwi. It also holds the world record for laying the largest eggs relative to its body size.

Contrary to popular belief, these kiwis aren’t shy, and are extremely territorial and feisty. Their beaks are sharp enough to damage a hand, and their claws are pretty nasty too; many a conservationist have scars  from checking burrows for eggs and chicks.

The North Island brown kiwi is a flightless, nocturnal bird that lays a single egg which averages 15% of its body size (about 1 lb). It is the only bird known to consistently have both a left and right ovary as most birds have only a single ovary. – WTF Fun Facts
