Although Higgins has never been to Syria, and until recently had no connection to the country, he has become perhaps the foremost expert on the munitions used in the war. On YouTube he scans as many as 300 new videos a day. Even when a rocket has largely been destroyed, he can often identify it from whatever scraps survive. When he doesn’t recognise a weapon, he researches it, soliciting information from his followers on Facebook and Twitter. In June 2012 he revealed on his blog that the Free Syrian Army had obtained anti-aircraft guns. The next month he presented video evidence that Assad’s regime had deployed cluster bombs. ‘It’s very incongruous, this high-intensity conflict being monitored by a guy in Leicester,’ Stuart Hughes, a BBC News producer, told me. ‘He’s probably broken more stories than most journalists do in a career.’

Unverified footage, which came into the spotlight following a post by prominent blogger ‘Brown Moses’, allegedly shows Syrian rebels using chemical weapons on 21st of August. RT discusses the videos, the potential chemical trail, and for the record, comments on Brown Moses’ in-depth work on social media coming from the Syria conflict.

Red berets are worn by members of the Syrian Republican Guard, also known as the Presidential Guard, as well as the military police. Just to clarify, as it's confused some people, the August 21st CW attack was at night, but this video shows the munition being used by the government forces, something it has used several times before (see here), so while it might not be the CW attack, it shows the government using them.  I also believe there's a high explosive version of this munition as well, as seen in Homs. Nic Jenzen-Jones has more information on this munition on his blog. Update I've just been contacted by the activists who filmed this, who said "This is fired from the areas to the east and north east of Al-Mezzeh Airport around Daraya."
