On a very changeable weather Saturday we had a bit of a mega day darting about to a few places, getting two bird year ticks along the way taking my year list to 174. Again a figure I am so happy with this year, I didn’t reach it last year until September.
We went to Testwood Lakes the main lake shown in the 1st picture in this photoset this morning/into the afternoon to see if we could see the Wood Sandpiper that had been there. At the first hide what it overlooks shown in the 2nd picture I took today in this photoset we saw a sandpiper very far back and thought it may be a Green they were also around we were told. So it looked like I repeated what I did on Sunday when we were at Hill Head looking for Roseate and Black Terns but the year tick was a commoner tern the Sandwich but a bird we still had not seen until that point. However upon a few of us getting better views of this sandpiper we could make out that it actually was the Wood Sandpiper. This was an amazing bird to see it’s definitely up there with my greats this year. It was only my fourth ever sighting of one and this could become crucial in terms of where my year list ends up I didn’t see one during my personal record 190 bird haul last year. We then walked onto the next hide and did see a couple of Green Sandpipers again at a distance, but this was a year tick I was relieved to get as it was one of a (after the last few weeks dwindling) list of bird targets which included perhaps some of the commoner species that had alluded me so far.
This afternoon we dropped my Mum’s husband off at Titchfield Haven and had a look at Hill Head, before going to Browndown with the dogs and we would return to Hill Head later. The sea was very choppy and it was windy at both as the 3rd and 4th pictures in this photoset show of a wave and a view. At Browndown the wildlife highlight was the Painted Lady shown in the 5th picture in this photoset it was lovely to see for a second time this year a butterfly I often don’t see easily in a year and one that was key to me being able to break my butterfly year list record this year. Four years ago I remember the beach here being covered in plastic but it looked a lot better today which was encouraging. I took the 6th and 7th pictures in the photoset of our dogs Missy and Ruby playing ball and upon returning to Hill Head took the 8th picture in this photoset of a Black-headed Gull.
