Best remembered for playing the neurotic titular character on the syndicated Norman Lear soap opera parody Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Lasser starred on the daily serial for two seasons in 1976 and 1977 before leaving due to exhaustion caused by the grueling schedule. A ratings hit and critically praised for it's irreverent approach to daring storylines, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman was considered so controversial that it was only aired after midnight by some stations in the U.S. and Canada, with some markets refusing to run the series entirely. The show had such cultural impact during the era that it was parodied on The Carol Burnett Show, The Donny and Marie Show, and Bob Hope's Bicentennial Star Spangled Spectacular.
