December 12th - The Chief
Doctor Niles Caulder is a brilliant, inventor, chemist and engineer. Early in his career, Caulder’s work was funded by a mysterious benefactor. With the near unlimited funds Caulder was provided, he was able to develop a chemical formula that substantially slowed the aging process. It was ultimately revealed that this benefactor was the super villain and war criminal known as General Immortus. Immortus had hired Caulder to create an elixir to replace the one that had been prolonging his life for centuries but was now failing.
Caulder refused to continue the work when he discovered the truth about his employer. Yet Immortus had secretly implanted an explosive device in Caulder's torso, which he could set off remotely, and any attempt to remove it or refuse the villain’s will. Caulder eventually devised a plan to get the bomb out, yet it left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Now calling himself ‘The Chief,’ Caulder formulated the group of oddball superheroes known as The Doom Patrol to help protect the world from Immortus’ schemes. The team was composed of Robotman, Elasti-Girl and Negative Man. They initially succeeded in thwarting Immortus and continued on as a team under The Chief’s guidance, taking on all manner of supernatural threats.
It was later revealed that Caulder was not the kind and benevolent individual that he presented himself as. It turned out that he was obsessed with the ways in which personal and societal cataclysms forced one’s to evolve int their best selves; and that he had actually engineered the various accidents that bestowed each of the members of the Doom Patrol that strange and freakish powers. Furthermore, Caluder was plotting a world wide cataclysm that he believed would initiate the next step of human evolution (albeit at the cost of countless lives). The Doom Patrol was able to stop the Chief from completing this scheme and Caulder himself appeared to perish at the hands of the Candlestick Maker.
This malevolent aspect of The Chief’s persona was retconned following the Infinite Crisis event and, though The Chief has been portrayed as grouchy and irascible, he is not evil and has returned to The Doom Patrol’s side in the numerous adventures.
Actor Bruno Bichir portrayed The Chief in the television series Titans; whereas actor Timothy Dalton has played the character in the Doom Patrol series. The Chief first appeared in the pages of My Greatest Adventure #80 (1963).
